"Not only can you save money or upgrade to a more upscale vehicle by buying used, you can also find cars that are as reliable as or better than some newer models. Below are some 2008 vehicles that, when compared with similar almost-new 2010 models in our Annual Auto Survey, had about the same or fewer problems. The average 2008 model had 35 problems per 100 vehicles; the average 2010 model had 13."-Consumer Reports, April 2011 issue
I assume those numbers for 2008 are the problems per 100 in 2008 when they were new. A lot of times, all things considered, used is not the better deal. A new car will need nothing more in the way of maintenance than oil changes and tire rotations for at least 3 years. If financing, a new car has a lower loan rate. Dealers make maybe $500 profit on a new car, probably $2,500 on a late model used car. 3 years of bumper to bumper zero deductible warranty that is on a new car is worth considerable. And lastly the joy of a new car is worth something.
