So I was a proud new owner of a 2010 Vibe back in November. Absolutely the car, great on gas and put a little money into it. Literally 7 months later on 05-21-2011 she was pronounced Totaled. (RIP VICKY) If you live in Orlando, FL you know I-4 = death trap. I was headed east bound towards downtown when the 2nd car in front of me came to an abrupt stop and the car that was directly in front of me braked and swerved to the left shoulder. Instinct told me to look in my rear view mirror and with little time to think I managed to avoid hitting the car in front of me by also veering towards the left shoulder, but the idiot behind me soooo did not brake, causing minor damage from to the rear end (what looks like a scratch) which then forced me to go head on into the cement highway divider. I came out with minor injuries and thank god everyday for those highway dividers. If not I would of been forced into oncoming traffic.and thankfully since my family owns a dealership I bought the car for less than what it was worth and came out with an extra 4g's to put down on a 2011 mazda 3. Question is should the airbags have deployed?? REALLLY?!?!?!?!?
I'm sorry to hear that, but glad you are OK. Because of the high cost of the airbags, they are programmed only to deploy at a minimum set speed and within so many degrees from the centerline of the vehicle. If you had rear-ended the car in front of you, again, depending on speed and angle of impact, yes, it would have.
Sorry to hear about the loss, glad you are ok.Following too closely sucks.Sadly in todays traffic habits people simply do not leave enough room to react to an emergency. At freeway speeds it is virtually impossible to react in the distance most people allow!Dave
Glad you only had minor injuries. Sorry about your VIBE and I would think the air bag should have deployed

Greeting former fellow Florida Viber...So sorry to hear about the early demise of your baby there, I-4 is a scary place (that 100 car pile up was how long ago?) In answer to your question, no the air bag should not have gone off as the are designed to deploy when hit the front of your car head on, at least it looks like the hit was at more of and angel and I think that is why they/it did not deploy.

Looks like they should have. Don't fight it, because you will lose lol. They are designed to deploy in frontal to NEAR frontal crashes.. and yours.. is definitely near frontal. I've seen several of the Vibes totaled, and not only will the front ones deploy in a NEAR frontal crash, but the curtain bags also seem to deploy. It probably didn't hit a sensor. Airbags are freakin' picky! Glad your okay! Did you seatbelt lock?

no but the car that was in front of me pulled over and did help me out the car since the door was jammed.. and thanked me enough from avoiding rear ending his car... he said the car that caused it all took off..
