Help with stock stereo

Post by Dhorn33 »

My wife and I just picked up a 2003 Vibe last night and so far we love it. It came with an aftermarket head unit with a flip out screen and DVD player which is cool, but I think my wife would prefer to go back to a stock stereo for simplicity. I looked online for one and there appears to be 8-10 different units available for this car all with different part numbers? The stock wire harness is still in place so I was hoping to just plug in a stock unit and have it work but the salvage yards are telling me that may not be the case. Can anyone point me in the right direction on this? The ones I see online appear to have a spot for 2 plugs on the back and the current stereo harness has only 1 24 pin plug with only 14 pins actually there? I was just going to get a cheap single CD stock head unit but if the 6 disk will work that's cool too. Thanks for your help!

Do you have a picture of the plug or back of the aftermarket radio? Does your car have the stock 4 speaker system or does it have the subwoofer w/ tweeters? If an aftermarket HU was installed, reverting back to stock will depend on the system in your car as well as how they installed the aftermarket HU and wiring harness. Can you tell, does it look like the stock plug(s) were cut off and the aftermarket harness spliced on? This is the back of a stock radio from a 2003 for reference (currently for sale).

You have the basic system, the basic radio should plug right into the 24pin harness..

Thanks guys. The original owner (I am the 3rd owner) had a system in the car but he removed most of it except some wiring and the Dual DVD touch screen head unit. The guy we bought the car from complained of "the cd spinning constantly and making a lot of noise" even though there was no CD in the unit. I took it apart and figured out that there was a cooling fan with a bad bearing that was causing all the noise so I spent some time yesterday trying to track down a replacement for the fan. This proved to be a little tougher than I would have thought but apparently a 30mmx30mmx10mm 2 wire dc fan is not super common - at least here in MN. I wasn't able to find one locally and at the suggestion of several suppliers I contacted the manufacturer Dual only to be told that they did indeed have them on the shelf but that they would not sell me one. Great support. They wanted me to spend $117 to have them repair it so I ended up ordering one from Ebay for less than $9 shipped and I am waiting for it to arrive. In the meantime I reinstalled the stereo sans fan and I think we will make it work. I was thinking I would pick up the stock one instead but I guess my wife wants to keep this one and she wants me to figure out how to wire it up so the video works while the car is driving for road trips. It also has 2 video outputs so I think I will install some cables to hook up head rest monitors for my 2 kids and hopefully it doesn't skip playing DVD's like the portable units we have tried. Anyway - thanks.Curious, - how much do you want for that stock unit?
