Hey folks, I haven't been on much lately but I thought I'd share this..weirdness. I got off work early today, rushed home and set out to change the oil in the Vibe before it got dark. Drained the oil, took off the old filter, tidied everything up and went for the new filter..found this:I got a pre-assembly filter, I guess. Minus the casing. Grr. Had to clean up the old filter and put it back on, which kind of sucks because to put a replacement on at this point I would have to drain out the new oil. There's a lesson here, I suppose.. always peek inside the box before you pick out your filter.

Nice photo. it looks like a Mobile 1 magazine add or something.

this a joke?generally when you have something like this happen, you don't stage the part in perfect lighting on a lightly draped cloth clearly displaying the advertising on the package and quality of the inner materials. Like K-NINE said, it looks like a shot for a magazine or something.I'd expect something like this to be on your kitchen table or a garage floor or something nearby that you were working on or with when you discovered this issue.

The photo was taken on my bed, which is about 5 feet from my front door and just up a flight up steps from my car. I took it inside because it was dark out and I usually don't bring my camera along for oil changes. Although I can really find the humor in disassembling a $13 filter for the entertainment of the internets

You don't have to drain the oil to change the filter. You will have to top off since you lose what is in the filter though.I always checked the M1 filters before buying, a lot of times they get swapped for a cheaper one...

People have gone to great lengths for a chuckle on the web so it is always in the back of my mind.On a side note, that does indeed suck that you ended up with a half assembled filter. Nothing worse than getting a job apart only to realize you don't have complete parts to finish the service.

I always check the oil filter in the box before taking it. I once received a filter without the gasket installed. So now I always check.

Not even a courtesy reply. Rock solid business

A long time ago, while in high school, I worked for a large auto parts chain and we had a couple of Wix filters that looked like that (sans case) and were used as promotional materials. Not saying that's the case here, but I know they still do that (my local NAPA has a deconstructed ProSelect and a Gold filter on their parts counter). And I think you got a great deal w/the free oil, especially if you didn't have to go all "angry old coot" on them. I'm channeling my auto parts days again...

ALWAYS.... ALWAYS... shake your oil filter real good, and/or whack it on your hand real good before installing it... Any funkies that mighta got inside, well... you wanna know...
You shoulda shrugged your shoulders, told them you put it on and now your car isn't running so well... You think you might need a new motor... lol... A friend of mine got a new motor for his Suzuki car because walmart gave him the wrong oil filter... lol...
