How to best approach my dealer regarding catalytic converter replacement...

Post by buffboy »

I've noticed a few times lately a rotten egg smell associated with the catalytic converter 'issue', primarly after reversing into my driveway or driving with the hatchback open. I've also been envious of all you gen-vibers who seem to get significantly better fuel mileage than myself (another 'symptom'). Both are 'minor' issues at this point but indicate a problem nonetheless. So, since I've made an appointment to have my recalled ECM replaced next week, I mentioned I would like my cat evaluated at the same time. I told the service dude about the TSB (which I found on this site of course!) regarding the cat ssue and warranty replacement. The service guy sort of brushed that off claiming that you can find "anything" on the net and asked a few times if I have ever had my fuel injecctors flushed. So, since I'm expecting some push back from the dealer, I have two questions:1. will having my fuel injectors cleaned (as I expect the dealer will offer to do) have any effect on the smell/mileage issue?And2. how do they ultimately determine the cat is in need of warrantied replacement?I'm hoping to arm myself with enough information so when I get there, I don't get stuck paying for unnecessary work. Any info and tips would be most appreciated. I've never dealt with a dealer regarding warranty work before.Cheers,Chris
