We are expecting some pretty bad storms late this afternoon/tonight.. Calling for possible strong tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds.. I was wondering if taping some cardboard over top of my sunroof would protect it against any sunroof breakage from hail. I live in a townhouse with no covered parking, so this is not an option. Any other ideas appreciated!
Packaging and crating professional here, so my thoughts come from that background. From what I know, for impact resistance the concept is to transfer the impact energy in a perpendicular direction (and/or around the object to be protected) from the projectile's vector. Maybe a sandwich of readily available materials? 2 pieces of cardboard with something in between like:Old blanket(s) folded upFurniture padR-Tech Styro sheeting from the bldg. sup. storeA few layers of cardboard might work too, especially if topped buy a thin layer of something more rigid like thin plywood or corrugated plastic. My mind always goes to worst-case-scenario (read grapefruit sized hail). I might worry for the windshield too. But I'm sure your weather event won't be anywhere near the kind of extreme.Let's hope for small or no hail. Good luck!
I wondered this myself, and then I realized that like Sublimewind says, Uh, if its big enough to knock out the sunroof, it's probably going to total out your car or come close.that said...http://hailblankets.com/
Yeah.. Its just the point of getting in and getting to drive if I had to.. And not being poured down on by rain.. lol.. but oh well! If it goes.. it goes!
