Office Loaner Laptops are so horrible

Post by Whelan »

I swear it can never be easy. I used to try and connect using my personal laptop to the Citrix but that never worked because it would always bring me to a page saying my stuff was not up to date and a huge list of codecs and patches needed to be downloaded. So I would download, install, reboot, and finally if I was lucky connect. Then a month later, new updates would appear but could not be automatically installed. Better still, the list was not showing what I needed, it was the generic huge list again so I had to re-download them all to be sure. Now I move forward to the my loaner laptop, from the office, should work better. Not. Its an ancient IBM ThinkPad with a tiny keyboard, tiny screen, and ridiculously slow processing. It worked for a bit but now trying to log on since 630am (it is now 730) to get some early work done (now I'm technically late for work). I am dealing with software updates that have already required one reboot and again the same error pops with another reboot looming I am sure. So I thank the laptop for being a POS, and I do not want to call our support line because then you have to authenticate yourself, go through the options, explain the error and listen to dribble that takes you nowhere from a person who you can't understand anyways.I love my job somedays

Yep welcome to the world of IT. Money is tight and ofcourse IT has had it day of glory (late 90's early 00's). Yes I deal with 5-8 yo computers that will function just fine but are slow. What causes more issues than anything is the crap users install. Yahoo, Google toolbars and stupid useless apps people install on thier computers because they are "free" but loaded with mal-ware and crap-ware. You almost need to reload the system to get it running corectly. But the down side of re-loading is all the MS updates you need. On my childrens computers and work systems I have made restricted users where they can't install any software (other than MS/virus software updates which is done automaticly). If they need any thing installed it goes through me first.Sorry Whelan but it's a cross we all must bear in these times!

Not dealing with office computer, but need to vent too. I payed $1600.00 bucks for a Dell XPS 13 laptop and its been sent back to the depot for repair 3 times. This last time, it was gone for a month, just got it back two days ago.. That included after they sent to back and me finding out they replaced the wrong parts.. Oh, and it needed a new hard drive, so they sent it to, but couldn't put it in at he depot, so I had to do it myself. I didn't pay the extra $400 for warranty and repair to do it myself. Oh yeah.. its only a year old!

Buying a DELL was your first mistake. Thier Laptops are POS and the Desktops are not much better. The Servers we've had more luck with. My buddy makes good money repairing and sell parts for Dells and he uses Toshibas for his personal use. Wecolme to Dell Hell!

I ditched my Dell Inspiron E1505 after just over 5 years of dedicated service. I now have an HP with a 17.3" HD screen and goodies. It's ridiculously fast.
