If you are using AVG as your anti-virus software, DO NOT LET IT AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE. There is a problem with its most recent update that will remove some of the boot files for Windows. It hit me last night, but I was able to catch it before it removed all the files. Sometimes you will be able to use System Restore to get the files back, but not always. I'm surprised with this since I have been using AVG for about 10 years without any problems.

Yes, this hit my home computer running Vista. Fortunately the system restore worked.

I would suggest AVIRA Free. http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus. It a very good performer and even thought it's a "free" version. Matter of fact I believe it ranked in the top 5 of pay or free antivirus software. Goodluck on getting you file back online.

It got me. My Win 7 laptop refused to boot last night. I tried the system restore and it kept telling me it wasn't working. So I turned it off and went to a party. This morning I turned on my laptop and it was working normally.

I would uninstall and then reinstall AVG.

good to know this was the cause of my boot file issues.... I ran the update, and had the same problem, did a restore and it fixed it.But I was worried that it was something else, or that it might happen again.
