well a few things here... 1 no collar/tag2 didn't the shelter scan for a chip?3 no chip?4 fire the employee who euthanized the dog for not following procedure.5 why wasn't the dog supervised in the backyard?6 bad dog owner for not "The dog did not have a microchip or tag." end of story!the south and south west are high kill shelters because of the over population and lack of spay and neutering. Being part of a rescue group we are always heavly burdened with bad owners and lack of space to save dogs from the high kill shelters

...it's making a LOT of "negative" TV-air-play here locally....the Pinal Animal Control people responsible have hunkered down behind the typical "...no comment..." response and are obviously looking for "...damage control..." ...looks like there's (un) friendly-fire deaths, even in AZ.
...and the Devil said: "...yes, but it's a DRY heat!"

I'm going to take a different perspective on this because we own a veterinary practice and have to put down perfectly fine animals from time-to-time.Problem #1:"The dog did not have a microchip or tag."We charge about $20 to microchip a dog or cat; we offer that service every time we see a pet for an exam or vaccines. Being as people are generally cheap, few take us up on it. It's amazing that someone will drop $500-1,000 on a purebred dog and then skip out on a microchip; but it happens a lot.Problem #2:"A neighbor found Target wandering later Friday, put her in his back yard and called the pound."Somebody went out their way to do the right thing, when most people will just ignore a loose animal. Care and protection of the animal is the responsibility of the owner...not the neighbor, not the shelter, not animal control. As the animal was roaming loose, the owner played a significant part in this.Problem #3:Everybody hates taxes. People generally don't like bond levies. So what happens is that shelters have to rely upon volunteers to do the things nobody else wants to. Everything has to be done on the cheap and training is average at best. Firing someone for making this mistake, as bad as this is, is ridiculous. Unless you're willing to give up some time from your schedule to go volunteer to put animals down, you probably shouldn't criticize those that do. It's an ugly job, it's a job that can make you callous and it's a job nobody really wants to do. Unless the intent was malicious, and there is no way anybody here knows that, it's not a reason to fire the employee. This is tragedy, but euthanasia happens all the time to animals w/far less "star power" as this dog. The fact that we're going to hot & bothered by this mistake and not by the fact that tens of millions of animals are put down every year is sad. Shelters have a really crappy function in our society; try to put yourself in their position with the limited resources and demoralizing task(s) they have to perform. Cougar Vibe
It honestly sounds like the shelter did everything they were supposed to do (pick up the dog, post photos on their web site, etc) until that particular employee mis-read the paperwork on monday morning. Or maybe the paperwork wasn't filled out correctly, it's hard for us to say. I actually didn't post this to call for that person's head or anything, I have a lot of respect for shelters (and have and will only ever own shelter dogs). Just a sad circumstance all around, but I do agree that owners have the ultimate responsibility for their pets. Sorry to make anyone cry
