Anyone found the solution to the growl yet?

Post by bassrocker032 »

I did some searching about the 1000-1500 rpm growl that a few people including myself have encountered and the answers ranged from a/c compressor going out to bearings being bad, brakes being bad, cam shaft going out, and so on. I guess it's my turn to see what advice I can get. My growl comes from the engine bay like all the rest. It is a low grinding growl. It's not grinding anything, but that's what the sound can be compared to. It only occurs at 1000-1500 rpms, once I get above that, it goes away. It's not speed related because at any speed just with that rpms, the sound exist. I've noticed no change in performance, my a/c still works fine, no leaks, nothing out of the ordinary but the growl is very noticeable. Any help?

Sound changed today. While I idle, it has a deep rumble, also there is a high pitch jingling that occurs while RPM's are at 1000-1300. 1500 RPM's is when the sound goes away. It is not effected by the a/c being on or off, no matter what the sound is there every time I accelerate unless I speed up quick but the idle sound is horrible as well. Any help?

Listen to the engine from under the hood. Does the sound come from anywhere in particular? By the oil pan or the valve cover?Drain the oil and drop the oil pan and see what's sitting in there... to me it sounds like crank or rod bearings...

Could it be the dreaded serpentine belt tensioner?

Wasn't that the "marbles in a can" sound?

I've heard alternators make wierd noises at lower RPM's until they reach their peak voltage which would be close to the RPM's you're mentioning here. Although rare it could be a possibility

Star deceiver hit it right on the head. I dug and dug and dug but one quick search for marbles in a can found my answer. It seems like the problem is the belt tensioner piston.
