2003 M&T Newbie Bridged Amp Install

Post by Fels »

I should probably mention that I have little to no experience with wiring as a whole, and I undertook this project to both upgrade my car's stereo but also because I love tinkering. The parts I have might be less than optimal, but I'm working with hand-me-downs...HU: JVC-HDR20Amp: Kenwood KAC-729SMy goal is to keep the stock amp powering the speakers, and bridge in the 600W amp to power two ten inch subs.Right now I've got my car torn slightly apart, and I'm just trying to get the wiring right. I've got two RCA cords running from my HU to the new amp. I've taken the power cord that runs into the stock amp and split it to power both amps. I've split the remote cable to remote both amps.I can't get the power light on the new amp to turn on... Logically, I don't want to proceed further without making sure the basic wiring is right.I've been using this wiring diagram: http://forums.genvibe.com/zero...o.gifI'm not sure where I went wrong and I'm not sure how to troubleshoot what's going on. I have a few theories, but wanted to check in with the wonderful genvibe community.-Perhaps there's not enough power flowing to the new amp?-The new amp has a protection mode that can be triggered by the following:• When a speaker wire may be short-circuited. • When a speaker output contacts ground.• When the unit malfunctions and a DC signal is sent to the speaker output.• When the internal temperature is high and unit won’t operate.• When a ground wire of the center unit (cassette receiver, CD receiver, etc.) or this unit is not connected to a metal part serving as an electrical ground passing electricity to the battery's negative - terminal.I don't have any speaker wires wired in yet, the speaker outputs aren't contacting a ground, shouldn't be sending a dc signal, temp can't be too high because it won't turn on, and I've got it grounded temporarily to the chassis where I pulled the passenger seat out from.Any help?

From what I know, you def need to have a dedicated power supply to your amp. More advanced audio guys wills chime in shortly I'm sure.

You're going to need to run a bigger power wire from the battery, and a ground wire. You didn't mention anything about grounding the amp, which would explain why it won't power up. Shop around for an 8 guage amp kit with an inline fuse.

Definitely need a dedicated power line, with its own inline fuse.Ground wire should be the same as the power wire (probably go with 8 gauge or bigger). If you have a multimeter, test the power lines and make sure you have power coming to the amp.If you've spliced into the stock amps power supply, I'm surprised you haven't blown the fuse or melted the wires yet.
