Hissing/Squeaking noise when I accelerate...

Post by Atrixz »

Has anyone had a problem with their vibe making a hissing/squeaking noise when accelerating? This hissing noise only sounds when the car is in drive/reverse, and it only sounds during the first half inch of the pedal being pressed. Pressing the pedal further than half an inch would not make this noise. Took it to a foreign GM dealer and they said it's just some air flowing through. But I took it home and listened carefully on idle, and it seems to be coming from an area of the engine belts/pulleys...Also I drive a 2010 Base Pontiac Vibe. Any help would be appreciated before I take it to my dealer shop. Thanks

Not sure about the "hissing," but I know all about the "squeaking." I'm surprised this is going on with a new Vibe. My '06 will most likely need a new belt tensioner in the next year, because I'm experiencing this:http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=40737

Yeah, well I guess it's more of a hiss than a squeak...Kind of like a .05 psi blow off valve going off, lol. So you think it has something to do with the belt tensioner...Because this noise is more prevalent when it is on drive or reverse. If it's on neutral and I step on the gas pedal, the noise wouldn't be heard...

With how new your Vibe is, I highly doubt it's your tensioner, but stranger things have happened.Hopefully others with your model year will ring in soon! Good luck.

Well you could be hearing throttle body whistle. I could hear this noise on my 09 but only after installing an aftermarket cold air intake. The whistle/squeal sound happens just like you describe when lightly pressing on the accelerator because the flap in the throttle body is only slightly open and the air going past it makes a hiss/squeal or a whislte sound. It's also more easily heard when starting to move from a stop because theres less road noise to drown it out. When the accelerator is pressed down further the noise goes away because the flap has opens more and it no longer acts like a whistle. If thats the noise noise your hearing it's nothing to worry about. Its way normal. Although I haven't been able to hear mine make that noise since going back to the stock airbox so I dunno what your hearing. Maybe you have super hearing or something?

Thanks Matt, I'm pretty sure it was just the throttle body. I knew it had something to do with the throttle because the noise involved how much I pressed on the accelerator pedal. But again, GM dealers consider this to be "normal", I still bring up the question of why GM would make it so my Vibe whistles on purpose. And no I don't have super hearing, my car whistles like crazy within that first half inch or so of the pedal. Also whistles during cruise control, which is harder to hair due to the wind at high speeds. But is there no solution at all? I was planning on getting a new short ram air intake system this spring, would that help? Also tested, it does not make a constant whistle while in neutral. Just a hiss in neutral, which is most likely from the intake. Only makes a constant whistle noise on drive or reverse.

Wow well if its whistling like crazy that does sound a bit unusual. hey you may wanna check your silencer tank. Give that thing a wiggle and see if its securely attached to the intake tube for starters, then go ahead and pop off your air filter cover and make sure everything is snapped down correctly. you might wanna just go around and shake all of the connections to make sure nothings loose. There's not too many parts to the intake. If that doesn't cure the sound I could have misdiagnosed the problem. about the short ram intake my guess is it would make the squeal noise even more audible. It worked this way with my cold air intake but I dunno how it sounds with a short ram. The reason being the cone type filter allows much more engine sounds to pass through the filter than the OEM airbox.yellow arrow points to silencer tank
