Fishing Poles

Post by Jharrison »

Hi I do a lot of fishing and I have a few rods that don't break down and are about six feet or longer. They fit it the car but I hate having a fishing rod running through my car. I considered getting a rod carrying case and strapping it to the top of the car. Has anyone tried this or have any better suggestions. Thanks. Pics would be great.

You have a roof rack? And to be honest, I have seen some do it yourself elcheapo fishing rod cases fabricated with PVC Piping, some straps, black paint, and some screw end caps. http://www.ehow.com/how_454817....htmlh ... g/diytube/

Yes, i have a roof rack. That's a pretty cool idea, it wouldn't be to bad as long as you painted them so it would be obvious that it was just pvc pipe. I have seen some actual cases I guess i should compare prices of building versus buying. Thanks

My dad has rod racks on the top of his Envoy...I believe they are specifically created for that purpose. His are VERY long though (fly fishing rods) and the cases he has would probably be too long for the Vibe. Surely a shorter version is available though. They are hard plastic cases with room for the reel and he has them strapped to the roof racks, and sticking out over the windshield a bit.

Definitely NOT the photo of choice...but it's the only one I have. Here the rod racks are on the top of the Trailblazer (extended version) he had before the Envoy (non extended). (Person in the Explorer ran the red light...hit the back corner and knocked the boat off the trailer and sent flies all over the road.)

Wow, looks like a bit of SUV love gone wrong! Looks like everyone survived OK. Even the rod holders. I've seen several PVC rod holders at the boat lauches. One of them was a bigger diameter and held more than one rod. I wouldn't paint it black, though, unless you wanted to cook the gear. I'd go with a lighter color to hold down the heat build-up a bit. Would even make sure that there were a couple of small breather holes in the bottom of the tube.

I actually just made a Rod holder that mounts into the roof rack mounting holes (I don't have a roof rack). I've got 6 1/2' and 7' baitcasters that don't break down and it works out great. I used 4" PVC and modified some cheap "L" brackets from the hardware store. The back end has a threaded cap to open the tube. I'll post some pics for ya when I put it back on the car.

That would be great. Can you put more that one rod in at a time or do you have multiple holders.

Yeah, I can fit about 5 rods or so in there, without reals on them of course. I'll get a pic up one of these days just been busy!

Sweet! Good way to make use of those unused roofrack mounting holes!
