I just got back from my local GM dealer. The service rep stated that the "fix" for the cold climate brake issue is to put a different hose on, one that is longer than the old. Did any of you northern climate people get a new brake hose? Did you find out if the hose is insulated better somehow? Did you notice any brake performance improvement? I'm not in a hurry to get it done, but I told my rep that if I have to bring it in for the silly accelerator pedal recall, I might as well have the brake hoses done too. Your thoughts?

that's the issue that has been talked about on this website at great length, but due to the explosion of topics on this website, I could not find the related thread.......... so I started my own in frustration.OK, back to the issue: this is the issue of reduced braking on 09-10 vibes in cold climate states, in which GM issued a TSB stating that you could get the "fix" on a voluntary basis. I got a letter from GM, but threw it away. My dealer does not seem to care and will do the "fix" with the longer brake hose. According to the TSB, Vibes operating in northern tier states run the risk of much longer braking distances if the car is subjected to sub freezing temperatures over an extended period. I thought the whole TSB was odd in that how does GM/Toyota know when and where my car will spend its days. Just because I live in the Delta Quadrant, does not mean I won't spend a good portion of my days in Canada, where the TSB is aimed at. GM is willing to do the "fix" for any car no matter where you live. I figured Marylanders would have received the letter from corporate HQ as well.
WOW!!!! what a great post Tele man. Thanks. Sadly I was not aware that it took that much work to perform this TSB. I'm now leary of getting the work done since I trust GM mechanics exactly 0% to do a job correctly. My '09 VIN does fall within the TSB, but would rather take my chances with Bugs Bunny repairing my car with parts from the Acme parts company than risk my life again with GM.

I too have a low regard for professional mechanics and the problems they cause as they fix another but I'd never stoop to equating them with Bugs Bunny!IF you don't want GM to do, which is your right, simply purchase the kit from a dealer. They'll balk, they'll fight you but you should have every right to purchase it. They most likely will NOT give it to you and allow you to do the recall so don't even ask.If your bitterness and hatred of GM is that strong, put your money where your mouth is.Then again, with the opinion you hold it begs to be asked, why the HE** did you purchase a Pontiac at all!?!?!?Dave

You'll end up getting the recall done sooner or later. If you ever have to go in for warranty service (and Corolla or not, things will break!) they'll probably note that you're affected by the recall and go ahead and do the repairs. Even if you fix it yourself, if the car still has an open recall they're going to want to do it to cover their butts.Case in point, I had intermittent brake light problems on the Hyundai. Couldn't duplicate it so I didn't bother bringing it to the dealer where they would see the lights were working and charge me $90 for a diag fee to say nothing is wrong. $9 for an OEM switch and 10 minutes worth of work to replace it myself. A few months down the road, they issued a recall for those switches. Next time I had it at the dealer, I made it a point to say I knew it had a recall on it but I replaced the switch myself prior to the issue of the recall. What did they do? They took off my new, perfectly good switch and replaced it anyway to satisfy the campaign. Why not go to a different dealer than the one that you have problems with? When one pisses you off, you go find another one. Even if you have to severely inconvenience yourself and have to go to one at the other end of the quadrant.
