lights on instrument panel

Post by bikeman1 »

On my 2009, the backlights on my instrument panel cluster will switch erratically from dim to bright. When dim, a little yellow light comes on indicating (I think) the headlights or running kights are on. When the panel lights brighten, this yellow indicator light goes out. Anyone know WTH on this one?

answering my own question at least a little from earlier posts....it seems to be the automatic headlight system acting up under variable light conditions. Sunlight flipping the headlights on and off. Happened on older vibes too although I never picked up on it in my old 2003http://forums.genvibe.com/zero...17132http://forums.genvibe.com/zero...91066

well if it does it with in seconds of each other its not normal. it takes 5-10 for the lights to go on almost after say going into a tunnel. that was on my 04. If it is erratic, sounds like a bad ground, bad connection, or faulty sensor.

I have an 09 and mine are def not erratic.. or sensitive for that matter.. sometimes the sun is gone and the light STILL don't kicked on.. I have also had the sensor replaced under warranty.. But the little sun looking green light means your lights are on.. which will dim everything.. If you turn the brightness know (trip a and b switch) all the way to the right until it clicks it will keep cluster bright all of the time.. even when the lights do kick on..

Don't feel bad, it took me a while to figure this out when I first got mine too.

It only "flashes" (about once every 5-15 seconds) every once in a while, and I assume it is at dusk like it was yesterday. Seems to be a limited-light issue when the sensor is getting just barely enough sun to power on. its obvious from these comments it worked the same way on the old Vibes. I must have just had the dimmers on my 2003 set high all the time so they didn't "flash" and get noticed. I will probably just go back to that so I don't notice it... and now I know what that sensor button actually is!!! Thanks gang!

Yeah, a clear blue sky and low sun will fool the car into seeing "dark" --> headlights on.There is an "auto dash dimmer off" position on the dash dimmer for the 04's. It's the detent right below "dome light on". I thought the 09's had the sensor on the center of the dash, and expected that to be less susceptible to this problem. The older models had it right next to the edge of the window, and only one so no voting.

Mine did this driving at dawn and dusk, its pretty annoying. I just figure if it wants to have the headlights on, I'll help it along and turn them on with the switch on the stalk. Otherwise during the daylight hours, I haven't had any troubles.
