Just curious. I had the good fortune to go to the Plant twice, several years ago. It would be nice to be able to pick up a few more items from the Team store before the place closes. Especially if there is anything Vibe related. Would also like to get a Nummi license plate & or plate surround.I really hate to see this place go Long live NUMMI!
I agree! This plant has been very productive and has built very high quality product for many years. My visits out were always met by very good people.....great to work with. Coming from 17 yrs as Pontiac tech to building engines for the Pontiac Vibe was like having my cake and eating too. I will miss the Pontiac component and the working relationship with our west coast co-workers.
I worked there in 05 & 06 as a GM Engineering Coordinator from GM during the development of the new (current) vehicle. There were about 18 GM employees (mostly Manufacturing) who rotated to the plant for a two year tour.Had a wonderfull time, made 15 trips to Japan, learned a lot from Toyota, both good and bad. Who whould have known that just 2 years it would end. Wanted so much to respond to the many poste here when everybody was speculating about the new car. NUMMI was an interesting group. In some ways very inovative, but in other ways they were very petty and back stabbing. I was disapointed in the elimination of the Vibe but NUMMI to a certain extent hated GM's involvement. They may have been happy to see the cancalation of the Vibe but it was obviously the first of several dominos to fall.I wish everybody there the best of luck.
I had always heard that it was a "love/hate" relationship between the two manufactureres, but in the time that I spent with the T/M's on the production floor and their T/L, G/L's, everythhing always seemed positive. Even when I went out during contract negotiations(was warned it may be a little strained) the folks I was around were very positive personalities. I didn't have that much contact with upper level admin. though, so never got to gage their attitudes to the joint venture.I wonder how many folks will relocate to potentially new openings at the San Antonio plant and/or Mississippi plant(when it goes online)? Also the KIA/Hyundai and Volkswagon plants to think about as well.Like you, I wish them the best wherever they go.
I think the NUMMI Team Store is about to close in a few weeks.I've also heard it's pretty stripped out.At this point we(hourly tm's) do not have "transfer" rights with Toyota or GM.I guess if anyone wants to move, they have to apply for a job at that plant like everyone else. Thanks to everyone for the well wishes. Thanks to everyone for purchasing a Vibe.If you'd like to help, you can "donate" money to NUMMI by buying a new bumper, ip, door, hood or liftgate. We still have the molds and dies to make service parts. LOL
