Window Recall.....Help me understand this. (Did search)

Post by cptnsolo77 »

Ok, I searched through many posts on this topic & its a bit confusing. From what I understand GMs window recall DOES NOT fix the shattering windows issue...the real issue is the the door check correct? B14CK_H4WK posted his modification to the door check in this thread: http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=38420 on the other hand some people HAVE fixed thier "window clunk / cracking noise by having the dealer fix it under the recall or retighten the window regulator bolts with lock tite themselves. So it leaves me with this, wouldnt it just make sense if you get the dreaded clunk / crackle to not even bother bringing it to the dealer, put some locktite on the window regulator bolts (if they are loose) & in ADDITION modify the door check yourself ? The reason I say that is beacause some members have also taken thier Vibe in for the recall many times to find they still have the SAME problem. Please excuse me if the is a little redundant but it seems like there is no concrete answer. Can anyone chime in?

That is what I would do. I got my bolts replaced by the dealer and the window still "clicked" on the way down so I took the door panel off and trimmed the door check stop myself. The dealer will only do what the recall requires. You can tell if you have the door check problem by running the window down with the door open. If it does not catch or clunk but it does when the door is closed, it is the door check. I have photos of how to take the door panel off if you need them but I would have to e-mail them to you since I do not know how to post them on this site. I can also write an instruction if you need it. Once you get the door panel off, it takes about 2 min with a die grinder to trim off the metal stop.

Appeciate the reply. I just trying to clear some things up because im going to replace my speakers soon & since im going to have the door panels off. My window doesnt click but Im going to check the bolts to be proactive. Just wanted to understand what the real problem is before I do anything I dont have to do.... LOL.

When the door panel is off, with the door closed, put the window down until you see how close the bottom of the window is to the door check stop. It is a strip of metal that "T" s into the plastic runner that goes out the door and fastens to the post. If you have clearance, you don't need to trim the corner off. On mine, I could see the bottom of the window hit the metal stop so I trimmed off the corner. You might want to do that anyway just to make sure.

Does this affect all 4 doors? I did the drivers side and was wondering if I should do the others but want to check before I tear things apart.
