Gear Shift head loose

Post by spiffy1001 »

I have a 2009 Base, I noticed the 'head' on my gear shift is loose. It won't come off, but it twists when I turn it. A guy I carpool with drives a Lexus, his gear shift is similar to mine and he has the same problem. He thinks Toyota pinches pennies on adhesive.Anyone have the same problem? Any ideas on how to fix it?

The chrome trim piece is snaps onto the leather or rubber portion... It can easily be fixed... I swapped my shifter our for a leather one out of a 2009 Camry.

I have the same problem.I never tried it but I'm pretty sure you could unscrew it all the way.If it does unscrew all the way off than a quick fix solution would be...glue.If you don't want to glue it in place I guess you could use some nail polish on the thread to act as a light glue that you could easily break when trying to unscrew it again later. Kinda like you can do to fix loose screws under a laptop computer.

They're just threaded on. Simply tighten it up again. If it keeps loosening, a dab of RTV on the threads will do the trick. Just make sure you use something that will allow it to come off again. You need it to come off if any work is needed in the center portion of the dash.John

Thanks snyder, apparently the factory didn't tighten it all the way, I just gave it two full rotations to the left. I don't think it's going anywhere on accident anymore.
