Anybody use a a trailer hitch/cargo basket combo on their Vibe?

Post by Cougar Vibe »

When we travel we use a Yakima cargo box, but I'd like to add a trailer hitch to my Vibe so I can put a rear-mount basket on it. The problem is that I've yet to see a Vibe (or any other small car) running around with one on there. I'm sort of afraid that four suitcases stuffed with crap will really weigh-down the rear suspension (even though I have an AWD w/independent rear). Anybody use a cargo basket and can recommend a brand? Thanks in advance!

seems like Vibe trailer hitches are rated at 200 - 250 pounds tongue weight, and with a hitch cargo box, it's all tongue weight, so you should be ok as long as the box and everything you put in it is under 200 pounds.

I have a 09 AWD with trailer hitch . I use a carrier and I have put 5--5gal cans of diesel on the back. Next time I will only put 4 cans just a few lbs to many.I have a 2" rec for the carrier so I have to use a reducer down to the size on the Vibe. The back of carrier drags just a few times with the extra can going on certain turns and inclines.I now have an adapter to raise the carrier another 2" but it will set my carrier back another 3 or 4 " further It may help and it may not haven't had time to see if it was wasted money.Getting back to your question I would think you should be fine with 3 or 4 suitcases and keep weight down to around a 100-125 #
