Winter Tire Selection (Sublime would be proud) General Altimax Arctic

Maybe it's that I'm getting older (29 this February, lol). Maybe it's that I'm in a different perspective on life with moving out with my gf and finding new priorities. Or maybe it's that my car just recently passed 102,000 miles (2005 Matrix XR AWD), and I want to keep it safe and running good for awhile longer. Maybe all of the above.Sublime will be proud to hear me say this as we go back and forth about all-season and seasonal tires. My General tires have done so well and still have tread left for the summer months. But I think instead of getting a new set of all seasons to battle the winter (have a feeling it's not going to be a nice one), I am going to invest in a set of winter tires. Look Sublime, I even bolded it for you!Anyways, I'm not looking to spend uber cash on this as I am going to have expenses coming up that are being worked into my budget. I have been doing so well with the Generals that I found the Altimax Arctic for $78 a piece. I have not searched for a better price yet, looking more for reviews. So far it seems to get a pretty good rating overall from TR.Thoughts, opinions? I would go Blizzak but don't have the cash at this time. They also have a new federal line that is only 54 bucks a tirecalled Trac Max Ice.I am really really happy with my Triangle Snow Lion TR777 they are quiet and grip great. I need to pick up set for my wife's car too.

AFA tires, you know my motto, even the cheapest snow tire will be better than an A/S tire in the snow...I ran these on my Subie and I was unstoppable.. https://www.tiresavings.com/ti...=SnowNot a Blizzak mind you, but did great with AWD... The biggest difference I found with the Winterforce and the Blizzak is STOPPING... not going.. (if you can use studs in tires there, do it..)Heck, a lot of the rally cross guys in the Subie areas, use the winterforce as an off-road tire in the summer months.. lol..

Sub's tiresavings.com site shows a Winterforce 205/60 16 for 61 bucks. That would give you a slight ride heigth lift for those snowy days and save some significant $$$ at the same time. I went for a slightly taller winter tire on my steelies. Worried they would be squirmy, but the snows are built a little stiffer, so the handling turned out just as good as the OEM size. Just a thought.Congrats, you will notice a big difference in snow with a real winter tire!!!!

I can get the General Altimax Arctic for $78 a piece there as well, with shipping it comes to about $20 cheaper. I am leaning towards the General cause I have one of their tires on now, another Altimax for all season. And it has been one of the best I've ever had. As for that Goodyear offer, tempting but after dealing with the OEM Goodyear Eagles, I am staying away from Goodyear for awhile.

I'll get free changeover in the spring and they do the alignment and all that. Not bad at all. I may just go get them. Question: Is it too soon to change over yet? Temps around here are 50s in the evening and 70s in the day still.

Yea i would say it's still to early. I usually start thinking about putting mine on about thanksgiving. LOLonly a two wheel alinement?? You do know you need a four wheel one, correct?? lol
