I dont really know how to explain it.. its a clicking sound and it only happens in the morning when i first start it.. after i get going it goes away.. soo im guessing the oil maybe quiets it.. but i dont like weird sounds in my engine bay.. any ideas on what i should check?
my car always ticked...all my 4 bangers do.its said to be the injectors or fuel rail and its normal. but if yours is louder you may want to record the sound and post it up.
I think that engine uses solid lifters - which means the valve lash needs to be checked (and adjusted if necessary). My '09 2.4 calls for every 60k miles - check your owner's manual for service interval.Usually, the valvetrain tightens up as the valves seat into the head. When tight, the motor gets quiet and left unchecked could lead to burnt valves. But if they are out of spec loose, it could make more noise. Don't let a shop do an "audible test". There is no way to determine the clearance - we are talking about .006-.010 of an inch and ther are 16 valves - by ear! Also, they need to be checked when the engine is stone dead cold.Dave
I have a base '03 Vibe too and it's clicked for as long as I can remember. Not horribly loud but definately noticeable. Nothing seems to come of it, and the engine is running as well as the day it rolled off the lot some 110,000 miles ago.
I always have the click in colder temps in the morning. Once it warms up it quieted down. I've driven nothing but 4's from the Saturn 1.9L, the Civic 1.7L VTec and this 1.8L VVT-i. All clicked.
Does the "sound" kick in a certain RPM? I usually get a sound when accelerating through approx 2900-3000 RPM, but I'm not sure if it's engine-based or if there is some sort of resonance going on. I checked all the heat shields I could find and they were secure. That said, I haven't noticed a drop in performance/MPG so its probably nothing.
