Since I saw a mention of the man on the moon, in another forum, I thought I would start a off topic thread about it.So what does everyone think?I dont think they were there......if so,why has Hubble (or any other high powered telescope, after all we have had 30 years to make new and more powerful scopes) not took a shot of the landing spots on the moon? And also in the 60's do you think that a computer caplable of doing what it was suppose to do would have been the size of a house, and would not even have the power of a commodre vic20.lol

from a website titled "Did we land on the Moon?"Quote »All the claims that it was a hoax are based on errors and ignorance. The most surprising thing to me about this ridiculous claim that it was a hoax, is that some people actually manage to believe it was! How do they manage it? If it really was a hoax do you not think that the Russians at least would have been able to expose it? After all, the ONLY reason for going to the Moon was to beat the Russians to it, yet they have never once even hinted at the possibility that it was a hoax, they know it was real! That is why they gave up their own attempt after they ran into problems with their booster, it kept exploding on take off! There was no point in them continuing once they realised the Americans had beaten them to it. Nobody in the world had more reason to want to prove it was a hoax than the Russians. The Russians are not daft, they were closely monitoring the Americans every inch of the way, and were able to determine for a fact that the Americans did actually land on the Moon, much to their annoyance. If the Russians say the Americans landed on the Moon, and they do, then the Americans landed on the Moon. It's that simple.

Nothing personal, but people who believe that the moon landing was a hoax are idiots. End of story. The evidence for the moon landing is overwhelming, and the evidence against a hoax is equally staggering.Imagine using a really powerful set of binoculars to get a clear picture of your toes. You can't do it, it's far too close to focus properly. That's what it would look like if we aimed the hubble at the moon. The hubble telescope is made for deep space imagery.

No question, it happened. I grew up in the 60s with the space program in SoCal. Lots of aerospace here at the time, employing engineers who lived in my neighborhood and whose kids I went to school with. Also, as one who remembers the late 60s and 70s, the Pentagon Papers, Watergate, the Vietnam War, etc., there is NO WAY that all the people involved in a moon landing hoax would keep it a secret. Humanly impossible. It would have been a bigger story than "What killed Michael Jackson?" would be today. As a bit of an astronomy hobbyist, I understand telescopes, light gathering and resolution. The Hubble is a big light bucket floating above our atmosphere where it can be aimed at a distant location for a long period of time and gather the light from that area. The cumulative light produces the images you see. Light gathering is not the same as magnification and resolution. The Hubble doesn't have the resolution necessary to see items on the moon as small as those left by the landings. here is an explanation:"The Moon is 384,400 km away. At that distance, the smallest things Hubble can distinguish are about 60 meters wide. The biggest piece of left-behind Apollo equipment is only 9 meters across and thus smaller than a single pixel in a Hubble image." Think about it, it is actually pretty remarkable that something about 200' long can be seen from a quarter million miles away. There is currently a mission orbiting and photographing the moon, that should be able to resolve the landing sites. It will be interesting to see what they find.

That's a nice light bucket, big Dobs are great for viewing. I've got an 8" SCT (although my son now has it with him off at college, so I've been out of it for a while). And for the rest of the readers, no, neither of our scopes can resolve the lunar landing sites, not even close!

There's a clip out there of Eugene Cernan (Ibelieve) of Apollo 17. He demonstrates Issac Newtons theory of gravity by dropping a Ball peen hammer and a feather from the same height at the same time - They both fall at the same rate and land at the same time, theory proven correct! To do that same test on earth with the same objects, you'd need a very large vacuum chamber, based on how it was filmed.EDIT -----> On the surface of the Moon at Hadley Rille, Apollo 15 Commander David Scott verifies Galileo's discovery that all objects in gravity fields fall at the same speed. Youtube "Apollo 15 Hammer and Feather experiment"Accuracy.... well I get there in the end!

Since we're on this topic, the hubby and I are discussing the possibility of going to Florida in November and hopefully getting to see the Atlantis launch.

That would be cool. Unfortunately seems like the launches are delayed more often than not, so you have to be flexible in your schedule.Back before the Challenger shuttle blew up, they were building a shuttle launch facility at Vandenberg AFB here in Calif., would have been just a 3 hour drive for us to see it.

David Scott, Appollo 15, Galileo..... The point is, They were there! (Well at least I think they were anyways...) You tube ----> "Apollo 15 Hammer and Feather Experiment"
The Laser Ranging Retroreflector Project is what convinces me humans were on the moon.Basically a big set of specialized mirrors were left on the moon, and we can point lasers at them from the earth, and use the resulting reflection to calculate the distance of the moon.Unless the entire astronomy community (which is a lot of civilians, as NASA is a civilian organization) has been duped by some sort of huge conspiracy, the moon landings were very real.

It happened, end of story. As for the first comment in regards to them not doing it and proof cause they never used telescopes or whatever to see the landing sites. OK here is what you are trying to do. Look at an American Flag in front of your house. You are looking at something the same size hundreds of thousands of miles away. That is very very very difficult to do. The other telescopes find other galaxies and systems that are HUMONGOUS. Could they look at the landing site, sure. But why? to prove a little myth. And the Russians know we did it, otherwise wouldn't they have been the biggest proponents of the myth of landing on the moon by the Americans, I mean they were in the space race with us.Don't disgrace our heroes
