Wheel Bearing cost?

Post by Neouka »

I've got at least one of my front wheel bearings going. Constant whirring noise coming from front, goes away when I turn a certain direction. Might be both, who knows. Probably worth it to replace both anyway. Car has exactly 160,000km/100k mi on it now.My question is, how much should this job cost? I'm not a mechanic so I'm just going to take it to the shop. I've gotten 4 quotes so far, most of the price is labor cost (usually about 2 hrs per side):Crappy Tire said $400 per wheelFirst GM Dealer (that I usually go to) said $500 per wheel, $1000 for both.I said fark dat shiat, went to...Toyota Dealer: $260 for one plus tax is about $300 per side.Second, seemingly more knowledgeable GM Dealer: $280 for one or $490 for both (saving 30 mins in labor costs when you do both)All figures are $CDN .... that's a pretty wild range if you ask me.The Toyota dealer said each wheel bearing is $63.36. Second GM Dealer says $61.27. I always figured the toyota dealer would be cheaper for parts!

have you gone to a parts store and found out prices? Most is labor, sure... but i'm not 100% if they are press in, or bolt in... hold on... I just stuck a link in the maintenance section to the service manual, and it's hosted online... BRB..

it's a press in bearing... http://madstyle1972.com/Repair...n.pdfI don't know how much, if any, of the work you could do yourself, but I have a local parts shop that will press bearings, if you bring them the knuckle... If it where a bolt in, it would be far cheaper of a job... I'd say that the lower 2 of the 4 estimates sound about right for a good tech... roughly 2hrs per side, removal, press, install and alignment..

My front passenger side went out last week, so I had both done at once. $360 labor + $75 for the parts. Labor was $250 for one side, so it made sense to do both and take advantage of the discount. The shop said that was due to not having to do the setup, tools, etc. twice.I bough the bearings from the Toyota dealer and saved over $100 from having my shop order them from NAPA. Not sure what the deal is there. The GM dealer was exactly double the Toyota cost, due to the fact that they order them from the Toyota dealer and mark up 100%.This is on a 2004 base with ~94,000 miles.
