code 2716 ECM / PCM replacement, car immobile until vin set?

Post by 300dweeb »

Hey all,my wifes 05 base model has been getting a code 2716 and shifting hard,I looked over the forums and found a toyota TSB on this issue, as well as a few kind folks stating its a ecm/pcm issue.I've also read that the VIN# needs to be programmed into the new ecm once its installed.Does anyone know if I can install the ECM and drive it up to the dealer, or if its immobilized after installation until reprogrammed?I'll change it in the dealer lot and push it into the stall if necessary. A used 12mo/warranty ecm for $85 and $105 to program it is a lot better economically for us right now than $500.Or, if somebody wants to make a quick $50 and has a toyota intelligent tester, or the necessary equipment to program a ecm, and they're in Oakland county, MI, PM me.thanks allNick

Also,we don't have chips in our keys correct? I was reading the matrix manual speaking about having the keys coded, and I was wondering if vibe keys have microchips in them as well, just in case I need to get them coded.thanks

well,I drove the car to the recycler, got the ecm, installed the ecm while car was warm, started the car, it stumbled on a lower idle (650rpm appx), eventually leveled off, drove it around town, no check engine light/MIL no codes, seems like it runs better. So to answer my own question: keys have no chips, and I may not even need to get the ecm flashed at the dealer (maybe the battery died and it reset itself?)will update as I discover more.

AFAIK,the first gen Vibe's computers were still pretty not smart compared to others out there. I don't think they really hold a whole lot of info so it may not even store the VIN for all we know.No chips in the keys either. If it runs, and no CEL you're probably good to go!
