Ok, so in the orderering process, the salesman told my father he couldn't order a Vibe with side airbags w/o the power package. This doesn't sound right to me...can anybody help?
I tried to check on gmbuypower and edmunds.com, but they haven't updated their pricing to 2004 specs yet. In 2003's, you can still order them separately. I did see that other post in this forum about 04 pricing, and they mentioned a new option package, the protection package, which was side airbags and security system, but it still didn't mention the power package. I'll try to doublecheck my source and I hope the dealer is not pulling his leg.

In 2003, you couldn't get the Security System without the Power Package. For 2004 the Security System has been combined with the Side Air Bags in a new package. Therefore to get the Side Bags, you need the Security System and the Power Package for 2004.
That decision might be based on data that showed that 90+ percent of the time these two options were ordered together so from a production standpoint it made sense to GM to combine them. Such efficiencies may contribute to the ability to maintain the same base price.

Don't worry about it. If your Dad wants side airbags, but not the power package, simply negotiate the price. The power package is something that your Dad may not need or want to pay for, but will like if he has it. On my Vibe, I didn't want or need a sunroof, but did want the Tunes (amp and extra speakers). Of course they only came together, so I calculated what a sunroof alone would have cost, and offered them that much less for the car with moon/tunes installed. Negotiate the price down for anything a dealer insists on putting on a car that you don't want. There is certainly plenty of mark-up on the Vibe to allow it. My Vibe sticker was 19,555, which already included a $700 discount for the Moon.Tunes package. With 7.3% tax it should have cost me 20982.52. After negotiation and the $2000 back offer I paid 17,999. That INCLUDED the tax. So essentially they came down about $1000 more than the rebate was for (I got a cargo box and mud flaps too). Negotiate. Negotiate. Negotiate! And don't stop until you are only paying for what you want, and you are offering a fair price for those things.KSNeptune

I'm sorry to hear you can't negotiate in Canada. There are periods of time when cars are so popular and hard-to-find that US dealers won't negotiate on them either. That's why I hadn't bought a new car through the "internet" economy boom. But with today's US economy the way it is I've gotten great negotiated deals on my '02 Altima and my '03 Vibe. Both great cars.BTW, the Nissan dealer started out claiming "We don't sell any altimas for less than MSRP", but when I explained I was gonna pay cash, which he could use to buy another altima to sell at MSRP, he eventually sold me mine for about $1500 below. Of course it was Christmas eve, and about 9:30 at night. I was content to sit there all night waiting for them to come down to my price or walk out. They came down because the sales manager "needed" to get home to his santa duties.KSNeptune
To Jfcou21: No rebates on the Vibe in Canada? With rebate, GM Card deal, and discount I got $US18,670 down to US$13,632. The Vibe is nice but IMO not at anywhere near full MSRP.

Most of the manufacturer's 'link' different packages together to make it easrier on production. If the plants had to run every different combination of individual options it would increase the time it takes to get a car off the line. By 'grouping' options they can cut down the different variations in the builds and increase the output from the plant.
