dead battery, locked out

Post by khook »

My 2004 Vibe has locked me out! Keyless remote won't work. Additionally, inserting key into any door is not working either...can't turn the key at all. Can't get in the car to pop the hood. Any advice?

Not to be funny, but you might need a locksmith. That is assuming that it doesn't get too cold/icy in your neck of the woods. In Lousiana, ice in the lock is probably not your problem

it should work with the key. as i was doing some audio work today i needed to disconnect the battery. after i opened the door, popped the hood, i accidentally hit the lock button, disconnected the battery, and then just used the key to manually unlock the door. btw i also have an '04.
None. Vibe is gone.

Spray some WD40 in the key hole and work the key gently back and forth this should work. Toyota locks tend to freeze up if not used for a while.

Having the keyless entry FObB you may have NEVER actually used the key to open any opening of the car so you never would have known that you don't have a door key????Just an idea.Dave

LOL, now that makes more sense. If they truly were locked in and couldn't figure out how to operate the manual lock knobs, umm... Still not sure about the OP's question and why the locks wouldn't turn. I would then opt for trying to go through the hatch. lol!

You know, its made me think. I've had my 07 for two years now, I cannot remember the last time I used the key to unlock any opening into the car!I bet that I am not alone, not only with the Vibe but every car out there with a key fob that unlocks and locks the car.His tumblers may have become seized due to simple lack of use. This could be a wake up call to all of us to periodically use our keys and shoot in some lock lube once in awhile or we may be locked out some day!Dave

I hope this is the solution, because this happened to me too. (Can the cold kill a battery??)

Actually, this is the 2nd time this happened.

Cold is the best way to kill a battery. The key will still work to open your door. It's a manual release, but it won't open the other doors. WD-40 will indeed remove any ice from the lock cylinder.

The key may be too worn to work on the door locks. This has happened to me, even though it would still work in the ignition.

Don't forget about the valet key, only works in the ignition. I keep one key in my wallet and one on my key ring with the remote. I decided to try the key on the remote in the locks and didn't work, but it starts the car. The one I keep works with the locks and ignition.
