What engine work need to be done to the 04 1.8 vibe to go beyond 8psi and is there a good link on how 2? I understand from other fourms that past 8psi the compression is to high. Can't we just shim the head gasket and go for gold?

I run 11psi most of the time, Its no big deal. 250hp is about all the rods can handle. You can boost up to that if you tune it right.

If you really want to go the easy route just add octane booster to your car on each fill up and you should be good for a few more PSI. It'll get expensive in the long run(8 dollars extra per fill up and about 250 miles per tank at an average 15k per year that's 480 dollars a year). That's about the cost of a new set of pistons so it evens out accept putting in a new set of pistons is a lot of work, but they'll probably last more than a year. but northvibe has a point after about 250hp or so your going to need stronger parts that won't break like pistons, rods, bearings, and oil pump gear. and monkeywrenchracing.com is the best place for the 1zz and 2zz engine builder.
I would assume forged rods/(lower compression) pistons and you should be good. If you want to run some serious boost you could have the block sleeved. As for octane booster...don't use it. If you want to run serious boost just do a water/meth injection setup, they aren't REAL expensive but you need to have it tuned (which you will need to do anyways if you go f/i)

easiest way to do it is buy a monkeywrench fully built stroker engine. 6k. that comes with everything. the main things that are a concern is the aluminum block, the connecting rods and the piston rings in applications reaching for 300hp+. The oil pump can also be an issue. The one thing to consider with lowering your compression is that it will hurt your prespool performance, and shiming the head is no good, it messes with your combustion and fluid dymanics of the valves, and it also makes it more prone to leak. don't forget about the tranny too. monkeywrench sells dog gears for the tranny, you'll want an lsd out of an mr2 to put the power down and a stage 3 clutch so it doesn't slip when your trying to launch.
