thinking about getting this car, need opinions..

Post by bodhi_tree777 »

I may have an opportunity to swap my beat-down VW MK2 Golf, some extensive tattoo work and maybe a bit of cash for this puppy. here's a link to the listing: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/cla...90111Not set in stone, and there's potentially another buyer I guess. Anyone have any personal experience with aircooled vw's? This is a 1971 Type III "squareback". Any input (and opinions on the car itself) are welcome.

Looks cool, pretty clean, I'd go for it!

For a '71, it looks to be in damn good condition.

Doesn't look too bad. Find out what the trouble spots are for rot and look it over good. The engine work that may be needed is nothing, parts are still readily available for them.Type IIIs can be hard to get specific parts for, anything universal is easy. Everything you need to find about 'what to look for' is right there on The Samba. I'm not sure how the Type 3 crowd is (hardly ever go into that forum), but that is the best forum for aircooled VWs...

Go for it. I like it. How are your mechanical skills? I hear those old VW's require the occasionl tinkering to keep them running smooth. What do think about getting a magnetic sign with your shop's logo and using it for advertising? It's an eye catcher. You could then write off some of the expenses on you business taxes.

That's exactly what I was thinking. The rear windows are tinted, I could probably do some sort of die-cut window decal and make it a promo piece for the studio. My mechanical skills are improving, for sure. Shop manuals make it easy, and these seem like pretty simple engines. They do require the occasional valve adjustment, but a Bentley manual spells that how to for me. I really would like to go for it, but the current engine trouble its' having gives me a bit of pause. Mostly, it's a hard sell to the family to buy a non-running vehicle.

I would find a VW forum and ask some opinions from those in the know. Mechanical parts should be easy, those old air cooled VW's have a large following. Maybe if you buy Mrs. Bodhi something really nice for Valentins day, she'll let you get it. I think it would be a great promo vehicle. You could take it to car shows and cruise nights. It should be alot of fun.

THAT, would be soooooo cool... A very unique rolling billboard for your studio, something that SCREAMs artist... As has been stated, there is such a following in the VW comunity for the old aircooleds.. I've thought about starting a business so many times, and thought as much about my advertisement, which with something eye catching like that could go a LONG way to drum up business... I think you should do it... put it on bags, hit up VW meets, hand out cards, have your portfolio books with you, man I could see great things coming from that... Maybe i'm just a car nut though... But I second my own motion to do it...lol..

Typical areas to watch for rust in any old vehicle are the lower part of the fenders, door sills, and floorpan. I know that air-cooled VW's are designed to be easy to work on, the problem is you have to be willing to work on them. Are there any VW clubs in your area that you could ask questions/get help from? You could try these guys too...http://www.vwtype3.org/

The owner (an 18 year old kid) isn't quite sure what he wants out of it in trade vs cash and hasn't nailed down a price..so I wait and see. Hopefully we can come to some sort of arrangement but I'm kind of resting on my heels at this point Still a slick car, though. I wish it ran, that would be a much easier sell to the wife. As it is, I can't even test drive it, and I've never driven a car like this so I have no basis for comparison.

those last couple of photos did more for me than the whole video . I definitely have an eye for the old, curvy rides. So the verdict, so far, is that the kid now doesn't seem to want to trade at all and just wants straight cash, $2000. I don't have it, so it'll sit until he sells it or I can muster that kind of dough. Anyone want to donate to the fund (or just come and get a tattoo)?
