Although I do feel bad for the people losing their jobs. I will be at the store this coming week to make an early purchase of a flat panel LCD. Hopefully a 40 or 42". I figure with the liquidation you can get a very bottom barrell price of under $1,000 for this size.
not so fast. Remember, the liquidator owns the merchandise now, not Circuit City. Therefore, the liquidator sets the price, which often is higher than the original CC retail price. Now you are taking off percentages from the jacked up price. Liquidation sales are not what they appear to be. Please do your homework before setting foot in a CC and buying something. You'll be suprised at the lack of values in most cases. Good luck.

hey my roomies got a CRAZY awesome tv, like $700 for a 42" Samsung Plasma (muuch better colors and doesnt look washed out, the burn in isnt much of a issue anymore), only thing is its only 720p/1080i but has 2-3 of all inputs. OHHH its in the living room and is a sweet tv...sucks that they have to lay people off but there are deals to be had :/
Oh I'll be careful, I know what 42" LCDs go for typically and if they are higher, I'll walk out. I am either getting a 42 or walking over to Verizon and upgrading to a Blackberry Storm.
The one over here went under and there was NOTHING that was a good deal... I thought about picking up a new Sirius tuner but oooooh, 10% off was all they were giving. A joke! We've had 3 big retailers in my town close up shop none really had any deals worth writing home about. At first you get sad to see them go, then you get excited that they may have some bargains... You go there and find they either have nothing left or the deals are just crap, so you get pissed off and aren't really sad to see them go anymore.

I miss Radio Shack too - and they're still open down here. They're just a fricken cell phone store now. With the occasional Sirius radio or digital TV converter box thrown in the mix. Back in the day when you could go in and look around for an hour at all of the little parts for your latest projects sure was cool.Oh yeah, about CC: Just saw on the news... Use your gift cards NOW if you have any!!! Once the liquidators move in they won't be accepted. Happened here at our store, that would have sucked to have all that money on the gift card and no way to use it. Edit of the edit: Nevermind, just found they will still be accepting the gift cards through the liquidation.

Trust me, the sale won't be that great. 10% off at the most. 20% on stuff they will have trouble getting rid of. It'll stay that way for at least a couple of weeks before graduating to 20-30%. We have seen this pattern now with 4 stores here...K-mart, Kay-Bee, Circuit City, and Value City. None really had all that great of deals...especially not early on when they still have a lot of merchandise. Now the last few days the discount at Value City was 70-95% and that was pretty good, assuming you are interested in the last, picked over stuff. I bought CP a USB mug warmer and got a set of silicon ice cube trays, but other than that not much was left.
A family member picked up a few of their display racks that have shelves, bins, and are constructed of metal for $50 dollars a piece. They work great for storing tools! This is when there was nothing left in the store and they were selling everything that was not screwed in basically. I do feel bad for the workers as there are many stores in MI and our economy is bad and not doing too well already.

And if you save enough to pull the trigger, you could invest that savings into an extended warranty available from some of the online companies (or direct from the manufacturer).I don't wish losing a job on anyone, but I haven't stepped foot in a CC for years. I'm just not a fan at all...
Yeah, you'll still get the original manufacturer's warranty. Just no peace of mind to take the thing back when it breaks. The Sirius tuner I have now I bought at discount from a Radio Shack taht went out of business - all sales final, and I couldn't even take it back to another Radio Shack when I had problems. Of course I did have problems, but instead of just being able to go to the store and exchange it I had to deal with Sirius themselves. Which really sucked, it would have been so much nicer to walk into RS and say exchange this thing, it's like broke and stuff.

I went to CC tonight to try to get my money back on my protection plan that I have on my recently purchased Bel Radar detector. They won't give me anything but a hard time. I am just out of luck.
I bought a Sharp LCD from CC about 3 years ago. this past December I kept getting calls from CC asking me if I wanted to buy extended warranty on it, I said "thanks, but no thanks". I smelled something fishy that they would offer me an extended warranty after such a long time.Linens and Things went under and a report in Houston found that the liquidation company jacked up prices and posted them as sales prices. one guy found an old tag for $35.00 under the "sale" price of $54.00I would be very carful in buying high dollar items

I doubt that you will find any worthwhile bargains at the CC liquidation. The evening news said that the extended warranties would be honored (probably a separate company not owned by CC) and also, to my surprise, that you could use up your CC gift cards. I have two - $30 CC rebates coming - hope I get those. Here in Columbus CC picked a couple of the worst locations. No wonder they were having troubles. One of their main benefits was having an advertised price to take to Best Buy to match. The ill fated CompUSA also served that function quite well for me.And remember Radio Shack's great misadventure - INCREDIBLE UNIVERSE"?For the majority of people flat panel TV's are a commodity - you can buy them at Sam's Club, Costco, Walmart, Sears, Target, Office Supply Stores, and even at grocery stores like Krogers where if you buy a 24 pack of Budweiser you can get a $75 rebate off your lcd tv. By and large you take them home, plug them in and they work fine.As for 1080i vs 1080p - no one is broadcasting in 1080p anyway. Only advantage might be for Blueray DVD's.

radio shack is going under? dang. i have one 2 blocks from me. i love heading over there to pick up some stuff and ask the clerk if they have something, only to have them look confused and just get it myself. oh well.....as for circuit city. i stopped buying from them years ago. i just didn't like their stock of computer parts. thank goodness i have a fry's nearby!i do miss compUSA. they had some good computer deals and parts. one town over there used to be a fry's, best buy, circuit city, and compUSA all within 2 blocks of each other. looks like it'll just be fry's and best buy. oh, and microcenter a few towns over.
Na, RS isn't going under... He was talking about Incredible Universe -- I hadn't ever heard of that project but apparently it was a Wor$t Buy / CC type institution that flopped miserably.I miss CompUSA too. A good bit of their stuff was overpriced garbage but you could occasionally find a good deal on stuff. It was nice to buy computer parts locally instead of waiting days to get it after ordering it on the intertubes. Luckily the small mom and pop shops are still around (for the time being) if I really need something and need it right away.

On the CC website, they advise those needing service under the CC Protection Plan to call the 1-800 # on the bottom of your receipt -- that plan may very well be handled by another company so I would try calling that number to ask about it.
Incredible Universe was - well, "incredible", in terms of size and selection of electronics and household appliances. It was entertaining just to go there. Their pricing was as good as, but no better than, Best Buy or Sam's Club. But of course they could not open more than one of these even in a relatively large metro area so for many it was just too inconvenient to go there compared to a nearby Best Buy. My memory is a little faded but I think they relied more on everyday low prices rather than weekly sale prices. A lot of consumers (like me) enjoy the thrill of the hunt when it comes to sale prices. I was not surprised to see them close.

I doubt if providing that info was mandatory. A lot of retailers do that. They probably use it just to see what their marketing area is. You could always just give them that zip code from the tv show -0 what was it , 90210?

We give them false codes too and I said (jokingly of course) to my hubby, great, they're going to build a store in the middle of the country on a lake - we give them my parents postal code and they live in cottage country.

i bought my ex gf a remote starter for christmas from circuit city...back in 2007. the price i paid included free installation.well, to this day, she STILL has never bothered to schedule installation, and now their website says they are no longer doing installs.i told her a million times not to sit on that and to get it done because after a year i didn't even know if they'd still honor the free installation. that was before this all happened.well, guess she's SOL now, she's gonna have to pay out of pocket herself to have it installed by a private installer.
YES!I still visit GenVibe periodically. I have not forgotten about my "original" family over here!

Walked into CC on Sunday with my friend. 10% off TVs. That was all. WalMart next door had 42" 1080i for $800. RCA, Vizio, and Phillips were the brands.I also heard Costco has them for around $600. So for now the TV is on hold. I did get the BlackBerry Storm though. Man I love this thing, got my early upgrade so it was a good deal. I am just about passed the learning curve, still trying to figure out how to change the tones for text and rings and such. But I have radio broadcasting on it which is sweet for work. I also have facebook and some other things. It's a great phone, I would argue maybe even better than my buddies iphone because it seems to have more capability.
yeah... went to a store closing in november when CC first started closing their stores. tvs weren't marked down that much then either. ended up going to best buy and got a great deal and no interest for 12 months

whenever this happens, the liquidator takes over, jacks all the prices back to MSRP or higher, then takes the %s off of those. then some ninnies buy everything up and nothing good is left when the discounts get worthwhile.

I went to CC on Sunday cuz it was the last day they would remove my stereo from my old car, and while I was waiting I wondered around with my mom. I didn't see many good deals, everything was 10% off. But their prices are higher than places like Target, etc., anyways. So any of the little accessories things I was looking at weren't worth the price. The only big thing I was looking at were Garmins, and they were pretty high even with the 10%. I'm just going to wait for them to go on sale somewhere else.
Last time I was in CC they didn't have any brands I wanted. They had a lot of mediocre brands at mediocre prices and accessories that were marked up double what their competitors had. I think that's probably why they went out of business. They tried to dress-up the combination of an oversized "Walmart" A/V department and closeouts as a srious big box electronics store.
i went to circuit city this past sunday and it was packed...couldn't find parking and there was a loooong line waiting to get in...went to two different locations and same story =/ i didn't get a chance to check it out...wanted to see if they have a nice gps on sale =P
Im still shocked so many people are flocking for such crappy deals. Don't they read the internet or see the news, there are no deals. You can go to BB or Walmart or Target and get better deals on electronics. Heck Crutchfield has better deals.
yes, agreed Whelan; lowincash, please don't waste your time. The "junk" is getting picked over by vultures, leaving carcasses of roadkill all over the floor. Don't mire yourself in that mess. The deals are no deal at all, and you'll be slugging it out with a bunch of long neck, pointy beak people thinking they are getting a good deal. Get in your Vibe, put on 80's on 8 on XM, and chll to the sounds of Def Leppard as you meander your way to your favorite store to purchase the item of your dream (in your case a gps; in my case a bottle of Amador County Zinfandel).

If you go at all, wait until the people holding up the signs on the street corners have signs that say 20-40% off or 30-50% off. It could be several weeks before that happens. There probably won't be a lot left when they do. But that is when you'll find a real deal...assuming they do still have what you need. If you want something no one else wants, go on the last day when it's all 95% off.
