Quote »Heavy coffee drinkers 'more likely to hallucinate'By Associated PressLast update: January 14, 2009 - 11:08 AMHeavy coffee drinkers are more likely to have hallucinations or feel "the presence of dead people," according to new research.A UK-based study quizzed 200 students on their caffeine intake and found those with the highest consumption were also more prone to report seeing, or hearing, things that were not there. Those who consumed a daily equivalent of seven cups of instant coffee or more - high caffeine users - were three times more likely to have extra-sensory experiences than low users, who had less than one cup daily. The Durham University study took in all caffeine consumption including coffee but also tea, caffeinated energy drinks or chocolate bars and caffeine pills."This is a first step towards looking at the wider factors associated with hallucinations," said lead author, Simon Jones, a PhD student at the university's psychology department."Previous research has highlighted a number of important factors, such as childhood trauma, which may lead to clinically relevant hallucinations."Given the link between food and mood, and particularly between caffeine and the body's response to stress, it seems sensible to examine what a nutritional perspective may add."When under stress, the body releases a stress hormone called cortisol. More of this stress hormone is released in response to stress when people have recently had caffeine. It is this extra boost of cortisol which may link caffeine intake with an increased tendency to hallucinate, say the scientists."However, one interpretation may be that those students who were more prone to hallucinations used caffeine to help cope with their experiences," said study co-author Dr Charles Fernyhough."More work is needed to establish whether caffeine consumption, and nutrition in general, has an impact on those kinds of hallucination that cause distress."People taking part in the study reported "seeing things that were not there, hearing voices, and sensing the presence of dead people".Mr Jones said such hallucinations were not necessarily a sign of mental illness, and around three per cent of people regularly heard such voices. Results of the study are published in the academic journal Personality and Individual Differences. One person commented "I drink a lot of coffee and...all I see is a lot of stupid people."Hahahahaha! I LOLed.

Caffeine causes vasoconstriction which decreases the amount of oxygen to the brain. If I was lacking good ole O2 to my brain, I would be confused and seeing things also.

If I manage to choke down a single cup of instant I'd be seeing dead people too. Or be a dead people myself. Working night shifts I'd blame the lack of sleep over the 4 pots of coffee
Iam so glad that I have never even had a sip of coffee in my life and never will. Most guys I work with Have 5 or 6 Tim Hortons a day.Talk about over kill.

Totally agreed with the dumb people comment! But you can also see that easily without being under the influence. This morning I had a pumpkin spice cappuccino from the gas station on the way in, and another cup once I got to work. Weird things do happen to me if I drink too much of the coffee at work but I always likened it to the crap they have there which is one step above drinking kerosene. Elsewhere throughout the day I had 4 cups of tea but I wasn't totally bad. 3 were peppermint which is decaf, and one regular decaf, no sweetner in any of 'em. And a sugar free hot chocolate somewhere in the mix. So I didn't get enough caffiene in there to start trippin' and see any dead people. It was hot beverage day!

I make my own (used to grind it and everything, but I've gotten lazy), use only filtered water, etc etc. But I drink a ton of it. Something like 3 big mugs a day. It's my biggest vice. Here's the rub..I am totally addicted to caffeine. Physically addicted. I get headaches and feel sick if I haven't had a cup of joe by 11 AM or so. It's disgusting, but going without is worse than when I quit smoking.
