Steering wheel vibration at stop

Post by Ampico66 »

I recently purchased a used Vibe, 2005 with 48,900 miles. When I stop I can feel the steering wheel vibrating. When I start up, even just a few miles per hour, it quits completely. Any ideas? I've been driving a 1998 Grand-AM (manual) since 2004. I'm not used to an automatic and also intensely skeptical of a car being 100% fine all the time. From what I understand, the Vibe will give me years of trouble-free service with just the usual oil changes and alignments, right? Damon - St. Louis, MO

Thanks for the tip and for writing back so soon, but what are rotors? I'm afraid I'm not too knowledgeable about cars. What would a repair cost?

Rotor is a part of your braking system, here is a picture to give you an idea. The price of repair depends on what shop you take it to and how much they charge for labour and parts.

Have the rotor replaced or machined, depending on how bad it is...usually they can be machined to get rid of the warping and you'll be fine. I've never had my rotors replaced and I've gone almost 72,000 miles on them. Mine is a 2003. No warping either. Just some worn brake pads XD Good luck to you. Hope this was a help.

In the topic title, you said it occurs "at stop", while in the actual posting, it's "when I stop" indicating you're moving still. I think each is going to be different causes. If you're feeling it while the car is in drive, yet while completely stopped at a stoplight or stop sign, my uneducated guess is motor mounts of some kind (though there may be Vibe-specific issues to consider). If it's while you're coming to a stop, I'm with the others on warped rotors.

Yeah i agree with ClunkClunk...if you are experiencing it while at a dead stop, I would suggest taking a look at your motor mounts to see if they're cracked/broken, but I think if they were then you would notice a bit of a power loss as well. Get those rotors machined.
