Aftermarket head units compatible with onstar?

Post by zoobernaut »

Anyone know if there are any aftermarket head units that are compatible with onstar without extra modules?

In simple no, Since the onstar is ran through the radio you will need the specific haness to reroute the signal and use the mute function. This part could easily be done without the harness but you would still lose the other features of onstar such as theft locator, unlock services, accident assistance, and the other like features. The harness also retains the door, light, and seatbelt chimes, aswell as the audiable turn signal..Now if you are just tring to save some money from paying for the $100-$150 (not sure what it cost) you could relocate the factory radio. in 2002 when GM started to run all accesorys through the radio many companes made relocation harnesses that allowed you to move the factory radio elsewhere in the car to allow the basic functions like door chimes, dome lights, ect to still work. I dont think they offer relocation harness anymore but you could still build your own.You would need to use a basic plug that plugs into the factory plug, and a basic plug that plugs into the radio. You will most likly need to buy an extra of each plug to make sure you can match every pin from the factory harness as none of the onstar connectivity will be on the basic harness. you will need to decide where you will put the radio and then run some wires and match the plugs up, matching everything but audio. When you run the wires make some pigtales to come off the accesory, +12 and negative to plug in your aftermarket radio, then connect the speaker wires and your done, you dont have to worry about amp turn on as the factory radio will still do this. This method will probably still set you back $50-$75 depending on part cost, and will take 1-2hr depending on your abilitys. If it were me I would just buy an onstar harness, it will be seemless integration, and save you about 1.5-2hrs of work, plus yo udont need to worry about finding a place to stash the factory radio in the car. If you do decide to make your own harness make sure to double check all conections and test with a multimeter and test light as if you wess something else up you would probably wish that you did use the onstar harness.Hope I helpedAron
