Update! Blown Motor

Post by THE VIBERATOR »

This must be a first in the Genvibe Forums but my motor is blown! And no, I didn't do anything stupid. It spun a rod bearing upon startup (after sitting for about 2 weeks). It was so young....71,812 miles. Looks like I'll either have a slight chance of getting it rebuilt or they will get a new engine in there. Either way, it died early, and I'm hoping I'm not so unlucky next time. *sigh*

Of course - with an '03 no warranty coverage left. Two things that are supposed to last a long time - an engine, and a transmission. And owners understandably feel cheated if there is an early failure. But it is so rare that they fail that a manufacturer could probably offer a $75 option to cover those for say 10 years, 100,000 miles.Owners would be happy, and manufacturers would avoid their wrath and negative publicity.Just my 3 cents (inflation you know).

But I thought you recently reported that you had let the engine get way low on the oil level. That could have been a contributing factor.

A few of the previous GT failures were due to an oil pump failure caused by an Aftermarket Pulley, at least in the 2 situations that are well documented on here. One member in Michigan and another in Maryland?

Well you are right...but it wasnt even registering on the dipstick. Meaning I had around a quart. After pouring 2 more quarts into the car, the level made it to the minimum on the safety. One more quart would have brought it to the top. However, they say the bearing was spun sometime shortly before the engine gave out, meaning the knocking noise was a loose but not completely spun bearing. It finally gave way and broke while i was on my way to work. Not driving the car would have saved the engine completely, and it would have been an easy repair. Not much I can do at this point but hope the engine is repairable. If not, I'll get my mods back but it will be a while before i can put them on.

No need....I have some good news. I'm entrusting my car with a guy my dad knows who's been in the business for 30+ years. They took a look at my car and told my dad they would REBUILD it, which puts a huge smile on my face! I'm so relieved. They said the crankshaft was the part that caused the engine to die....but I don't know any more details than that....oh they also said the inside of my engine looked just fine, so it was not beat up at all I will keep everyone informed on what happens!

I take it that used engine parts are not easy to find.

As long as the clearances are to spec, and everything else is fine, it looks like my engine will be back up and running. But yes typically used engine parts are hard to find.

No I'm not sure really...as of this point I know as much as they told my dad, but when I get the car back, I will have to ask them so I know exactly what happened. In the meantime, I've been driving my dad's Honda Odyssey. That's a fun vehicle
