Good Cargo Capacity

Post by KSNeptune »

Today my Vibe picked up and delivered a new 2-drawer lateral file for my wife's office. The cabinet was 36" wide, 19" deep, and 30" tall. Slid right in the gaping mouth of the Vibe with plenty of clearance all around. The useful D-rings on the sides let me strap it in with bungie cords. I was impressed. The gray plastic bed got a little worn, but I expected that. Anything that would have been under the cabinet would have gotten worn.KSNeptune

Friday night we went to IKEA and bought a new dining room table. It slid in with no problems. It was 40 inches wide by 48 inches long. Love my Vibe.

Tonight we brought home a new lawnmower, garden sprayer, luggage from an overnight stay in the city, and a very large trophy, and still had room for a person in the backseat! My bf was so impressed ... he's wondering how big of a TV he could fit back there. I said no. We already have 3 TV's.

You sure can cram a lot of stuff into these little cars. But please, if you haul anything long, keep it away from the dash... I totally overestimated the Vibe's cargo carrying capabilities, so I have scratches and chunks of plastic missing to prove it. Nobody to blame other than myself.

Last night we went to Home Depot and picked up a bunch of moulding for our home renovation. The longest piece we had was 155 inches which actually fit quite well in the car. I folded the front seat flat and had the moulding pressed against the passenger floor board with about 3-4 feet hanging out of the open hatch window. The funniest thing about this whole thing is that we have a Dakota Quad Cab and we chose to use the Vibe b/c it could carry the wood easier. My next big test will be this week when I load up 2 buddies and their mountain bikes and head to Moab for a long weekend. It will be interesting if all of our gear will fit (ice chests, tools, luggage) and how that extra weight will affect performance driving though the mountains from Denver to Moab.

When I was shopping for my car, I took along the box from a recently purchased 32" TV to check on cargo room. The fact that the TV box would fit meant that in the last two years, I had only carried one thing in my pickup that wouldn't fit into the Matrix/Vibe. For one trip every two years, I can either borrow or rent a truck. I'll gladly switch from a heavy, slow, expensive pickup that gets 14mpg to a small, light, fun to drive car that gets 25+ mpg for the rest of the time. Now I'm looking in to buying a small, foldable trailer from Harbor Freight so that I can carry the occasional large or dirty load.

I put my dish-washer into the trunk and it fit well. The only thing it is I scratcher my rear bumper while puller it out of the trunk. This was the only time I wished have a 2 tone....

From the plant nursery, I hauled home four flats of flowers, three cubic feet of peat moss, and a 50 pound sack of planting soil. From the Home Depot, I hauled five, ten foot long PVC electrical conduits. A trip to the North Central Railroad trail had my bike in the back (no rack, no wheels removed). Today, I brought a chair into my office and didn't have to fold down any seats. There have been as many as five adults on board for short trips.Hey General Motors: Make a bunch of these! The secret's out. You don't need a 5,000 pound SUV gas pig to take care of 99 percent of the real needs of real people!

I guess I'm the one contrarian in this thread - I tend to judge space by how much is left over once I have it loaded up. I have a small-biz consulting service that I do "on the side". I was shocked on a recent trip how quickly two servers, two monitors, a box of misc. (keyboards, software, etc.) and my overnight bag filled it up. I used to be able to toss all of this in the back seat or trunk (either or) of my Cadillac. (ok, not a fair comparison but stilll....) I don't like driving with the seat down at highway speeds because the road noise is much louder.

Did your Caddy park in 14 ft of space? Was your Caddy as service-free as your Vibe will be? Was your caddy as fun to drive?Yes, it's not a fair comparison. You should be ashamed! KSNeptune

They're actually custom made. I worked with a guy who made custom clubs a few years back and when I went to buy a new set, his price was better than anything else I could get. That and he had made my old putter for me so I knew he did good work.

These ones certainly play nice. They're not the most advanced in the world, but I'm not either. That Garland looks like a nice course! That's one of the reasons I bought the Vibe. It's tough to find a really nice course here. I wanted to be able to go on vacation to golf, bike, whatever and be able to haul it all.
