Secure place online to store Files?

Post by SeattleJeremy »

My uncle is looking for a place where he and his business partner can store the business files online.Normally, I'm pretty good about knowing where to go for stuff like this, but I keep all my documents on a USB key, and don't have a good solution for this.I tried using Goggle's Documents program, but converted the file to their format. This isn't going to work for them.

I would never store documents online. I would store them on DVD's or external hard drives at more than one offsite location. But it would be interesting to see who does store files online.

Storing secure files online just sounds risky IMO.... who knows who ACTUALLY has access to it and who can get ahold of it without you knowing.

No offense, but this is not the place to be looking for such a thing. As stated by others, if these are sensitive files, you have to take security extremely seriously. I know there are companies that do exactly what you're asking for, but depending on exactly what your uncle is trying to accomplish, he may not even be looking at the right service. Is he trying to get an offsite backup, primary storage, universal accessibility? For example, he might be better off with a DVD backup system or just buying a NAS and setting up a secure remote access method. His best bet would probably be to get a consultation from a REPUTABLE local business. I know people think that computer stuff is not that hard and that your nephew's friend's step-dad's neighbor is a genius, but really inexpensive, but seriously you very often get what you pay for. If you're running a business, don't cheap out. Believe it or not, it's an incredible job to keep up with the latest security problems, and simply using the right tool for the job.

Keep them local, just encryt them... I have a little free prog called TrueCrypt that I use... it's easy... Something simple to consider.. The DVD or external drive is another good idea.. I just got a 16gb flash drive on NewEgg for like 50$ that should hold all the business docs you can throw at it.. then if it's encrypted... well, you get the idea..

As I read the OP, it was never clarified if these were sensitive files. They're just "business files". Perhaps they're more needed for accessibility, than for security.Give us a hint as to the reasons to have these stored online. Backup? Accessibility? How sensitive is the information in these files?

Great information everyone. My uncle and his business partner both work from home (several miles from each other), and both need access to the files. I think it's mostly accounting stuff, not sure how secure it needs to be, it's not likely full of SSN's and stuff like that. But better to be safe. I agree DVDUSB drive would be a great way to accomplish this, but I'll have to talk to him about their data needs a little more. Thanks again everyone

While I have not used them I hear Carbonite.com is a pretty good place.
