100k preventive maint?

Post by 03Vibrator »

Hey everyone. I've had this car since it was new (2003 GT) I've done all oil changes, the 30k mile service, new serpentine belt 10k miles ago,new clutch 20k miles ago, spark plugs 10k miles ago. Other than that I haven't taken care of my car. Now I am a few hundred miles from 100k miles and I need to start taking care of it. What are all the things that I can do for preventive maintanance? My guess is I need a brake pad replacement, coolant flush, timing?,whatever else you tell me I need. Please tell me everything I should do, seeing that I didnt really take care of this car other than those things I mentioned.

30,000 mile service???? ugh!! That's a waste....OK sorry; all new hoses for sure. Hopefully you got the tranny fluid swapped out along the way. If not, you risk varnishing your transmission parts. Removing old fluid can often be worse than never doing it at all. I also hope you have been changing the radiator fluid along the way. Never changing this fluid will also cause buildup on the interior of the radiator, and like the tranny, can dislodge these particles if done way too late. I also hope you have been swapping out the cabin air filter every year. If not, you must have a ton of mold growing on the OEM one........maybe even mushrooms!!!

I've done the air filters.Radiator fluid no. It is a manual transmission so how does that work?Plus, I am taking it to a Volvo dealer (because thats where I work + discounts) but they will need all the parts. What do I do about the hoses? Which ones exactly and where?

there are two hoses. Best to do them (obviously) when you have the radiator fluid drained/flushed. You have done well if you have gone this many years without the hoses dryingout and cracking on you. I'm assuming on the manual transmission, there is still transaxle fluid to drain, but I'm sure not as much. Sorry, I'm no help on that one; living in the city means I always get an automatic tranny.

Manual Tranny fluid change:http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=29283Tranny oil should be done every 30K. I would think they would have changed the fluid when the rebuilt your clutch, but in any event, in 10 Kilomiles you'll be due to change it again.Brakes : As needed. With a manual transmission car, you use far less brake then an auto, but brake life depends very much on your driving style. I have 115K on my Vibe and, remarkably, I have yet to need to change the brakes, though I do need to do something with the squeaking rear brakes, so I may just go ahead and change them when I change the hardware, even though there's still over 50 percent of the shoe left.Coolant: So long as you've used the long life stuff, you should be okay for at least 60,000 miles. If you use the green glycol stuff, you're asking for trouble. Stick with the recommended radiator fluids. This isn't a place where getting cute will help you any. There are a lot of people who will give you a laundry list of things you need to do for your car. Truth of the matter is, if you're paying attention, you'll know when things need to be addressed, especially if you're doing your oil changes and inspections yourself. Use common sense. If your car is running properly, is supplied with the proper fluids changed at the proper time, and you're not driving like an asshat and beating on your car, you'll be fine.
