What's your take on getting a car that's more expensive than your boss?

Post by Vibe2009 »

So that's the age old question.... do you hold back?Sometimes you want to ask, with the money they make, why buy a economy car~~ Friend of mine swear he will get a Lexus after getting his first job... well, i told him, you probably will have a nicer car than your boss, not sure if that's a good idea~~I wouldn't do it....

I'm a boss - and I couldn't care less. I drive a 15 year old Lexus I bought for $4,000. Prior to that I drove a Vibe GT. Have employees with newer BMWs, Acuras, Tahoes, Lexus, Mercedes etc.Seriously, a boss who worries about this doesn't have enough to do. It is a free country, my employees earn their pay, it is their money to do with as they choose. They won't make the same choices I would, I don't expect them to. So, get what you want, don't worry about the boss. You should worry about yourself however. If you are living paycheck to paycheck, save some money and don't go overboard on the car, not because of what your boss will think, but what is best for you.

Can't say that question has ever popped up when I was car shopping. I've always purchased whatever car I wanted to at the time (case in point - signature below). Should you buy a bigger house? A more expensive watch? Nicer shoes? Priorities lay differently with other people. I doubt you'd get passed up on a promotion because you drive a more expensive car. I'd be more worried about buying a Lexus with those potholes in regina

We had this discussion around the office the other day... It isn't hard to have a nicer car than our boss, he has this '96 Corolla with a zillion miles on it. But he's a very financially savvy guy so it doesn't bother him, he's just hanging on to that car for as long as he possibly can.

If your boss is concerned that much about appearances, then he should buy a nicer car. If your boss doesn't own an expensive car, then it's likely he doesn't care, and isn't going to care what kind of car you buy.

The vehicle one drives means nothing, it is who is sitting in the drivers seat, and what they do with their time here is what matters most.... It shall be written, it shall be done.

Everyone's priorities are different. Most "bosses" in larger to medium size companies probably could care less what their employees drive. If they want to spend their entire paycheck on a car and insurance, that's their choice. When I used to have a boss, majority of them always got a kick out of my frequency of changing vehicles. They didn't care, but always liked hitching a ride in the "new" car just for grins and giggles. Some had nicer cars and others did not. Never seemed to bother them and I never really even thought much about it. I certainly would hope your employee wouldn't put a material object such as a car over the value of you as an employee.

The guy who runs my particular office drives an X5. But so does one of my co-workers. My other two team leaders drive an X3 and a Highlander Hybrid.Nobody around here really cares imo. But it just shows difference, as they may have Bimmers while I drive my Matrix, but then I wear a watch that costs $1100 so who am I. It's all relative and based on livelihoods. One may rent or live with the parents while the boss has 3 kids at home.

Find someone with a new Corolla or Matrix, pull your car up to them and pop the hood.
