Post by philndz »

if you saw my other post where i got the guts to drill in the mount for my cb radio....i also took this fearless attitude to the back of the vibe and mounted my fire extinguisher.

Looks great! Its hard to tell from the picture, but I hope the mounting bracket is strong enough to hold the extinguisher during a collision - otherwise you will have a ballistic missile going straight for your head!

I'm just curious... have you had the experience of having a fire in a car before? Do you smoke? Why did you think you needed a fire extinguisher available from the back of the Vibe? And I'll agree with the worry about having it mounted at head height... Ouch! It's small enough it might have fit in one of the side compartments that access the rear lights.KSNeptune

I think Lorin is correct. the plastic piece that holds the neck might not be strong enough. and your metal screw might not be strong enough either during collision.I remember readin somewhere that a 10 pound baby becomes 200lb + force during a head on collision. Fire extinguisher is at least over 100lb+ during a collision. don't forget that a head on collision is over 10g. any one with a physic degree, pls jump in.I really think you should mount it somewhere else.

A fire extingusher is not a bad idea. I've used mine 3 times in my last car putting out OTHER peoples fires. I love walking up to the police and/or other firefighters when they get on scene and telling them I got this. The jump kit, on the other hand, I rather not use but is nice that I can help.I do agree that your extinguisher should be moved. In an accedent the way you have it mounted now WILL become a projectile. Also, the way you have your compass and GPS mounted on your windshield and A-post is very unsafe if that passenger airbag were to deploy. Please don't think I'm badgering you, I'm just looking out for ya. I have seen many crazy things hurt and kill people that you would normally not consider.

Aren't you going to paint it blue and write "N.O.S." on it like the Honda guys do?

I agree with the basic tone of everyones replies here, Move the extingguiser lower, say behind the rear seats. That way, at least the seats act as a buffer between you (your passengers) and the flying projectiles in the back.

great advice...im gonna have a look today to see if it will fit in one of those side compartments....i hadnt thought of that....i cant put it down low or on the back of the seats b/c i often have the back filled and/or the seats down.i have actually help put our a few fires....never w/ my own extinguisher but w/ others....one of these was simply caused by brush caught under a vehicle.....an onboard fire extinguisher was a basic requirement in the jeep club.....safety first!

uhhhh....?? i think we are assuming here that you are present and are either in or around the car and obviously have the keys.....i rode along w/ a buddy in his jeep once and we had to use the thing before we even got out in the woods.....a honda del-sol was hood up on the shoulder of the highway and blowing a good amount of smoke......we stopped and used the whole bottle on his engine....it was still puffing when we were done but the fire truck got there so we left....it was somthin to do w/ a racing mod....the car was bright lime green and about half an inch off the ground....the engine compartment was a rainbow of colored goodies.....not sure what actually blew?

Can you say "projectile aimed right at your head?" Do two things, move it closer to the driver and move it lower.

I completely agree with everyone else, it has to move lower. But I think it's kind of funny because that is typically where the inflator for a side curtain airbag is mounted. Of course your inflator would be bolted down to the sheet metal with M6s and and contained in a guide and all that, but still, a pressurized canister on the rear of the roofrail. Interesting choice.
