Just got done last weekend moving to a new house. My family grew out of the old one that we were in for the last 5 1/2 years. But now we're having problems with our old landlord about the condition we left 'his' house in. And getting our deposit back. I and my wife think we did a pretty good job keeping the house intact and cleaning it when we left, dispite having a lot of kids around all the time. The carpet was worn when we moved in and we discussed having it replace then. I told him that we have kids visiting all the time and it would make sense to just keep the old carpet. I'd hate to have new carpet stained by a kid spilling their juice or something. Now he wants us to have the now almost 10 yr. old carpet, professionally cleaned at our expense. The walls were freshly painted when we moved in, over 5 yrs ago. Now they're just a little faded, some paw prints from the kids, and a dark area where the t.v was. We agreed we should clean those. Now our landlord wants us to paint the whole house, at our expense. Then there's the oven. It was an older model. Works just fine. But has some heat stains around the burners that wont come off. He's hinting that we should replace the stove with a new one. He's on crack if he thinks I'm paying for a new stove! Also, in our lease we agreed that HE would pay US 30% of the heating bill during the winter since he lived upstairs from us. He only paid us once in the 5.5 yrs we've been there.I see all these as 'Normal wear" items and I don't feel I should have to pay for these expenses. Am I wrong?

Bring up the point about the heating bill and ask for the deposit again; if he does not tell him you will see him in court.
