Another HID thread

Post by Truckin1999 »

I just installed an HID kit for my fogs, and have another coming for the headlights. I know its not recommended because of the glare, but I have seen several posts of people that were very happy with them and didn't get bad glare. Do those of you using HID's in the fogs have a lot of glare. I noticed mine are bad. I just don't want to cause problems for other drivers. I think the main problem is that the HID bulb is longer and doesn't have a coating on the end like the 9006 bulbs. The light is likely coming straight out the tip of the bulb whereas it is prevented with the halogen bulbs. Has anyone done anything to reduce the glare with the fogs? Would it be possible to use a ceramic paint on the tip of the HID bulb to try and direct the light better? In my research I found the bulb shields that prevent the light from hitting the bottom of the reflector. I doubt they would fit in the fog light housing though. Just looking for some opinions and ideas. I searched the site and didn't find any useful information on attempting to reduce glare. Also those of you using 3000k, are your lights really yellow. Because mine seem to be about as yellow as a halogen. They are super bright though! Thanks guys, -Sean-

The bulbs I've got are nowhere near that yellow. They were supposed to be 3500k when I ordered them. The plastic cases they come packaged in said 3000k. Just emailed the company. You don't seem to have near the amount of glare that I have. I will go try and get some pics right now.

Ya I was planning on asking you how you got yours to work so nicely! I found one thread on the site that said you can adjust the screw on the back of the foglight for vertical movement. Are your bulbs like a D2S type bulb with a glare shield built in? I can't figure how mine can be so much different in the same housing.

ok lets take one housing at a time.the fogs 9006 bulb. There is little adjustment but there is a minor adjustment.I had a similar issue as you and it turned out to be the bulb wasn't in correct.Check to makesure all THREE tabs have locked in to placeI found when i had a lot of glare like that i was only grabbing two of the locking tabs when i was trying to place the bulbs. If they are do you have photos of the kit you installed? For the headlights 9003/h4 again do you have photos of the kit?Yes there is an adjustment for the alinement. It takes quite a bit of turning to actually git the bulb to move.Don't be afraid to move it.I did adjust mine down about 1inch from the stock location to get the min amount of glare that you see in my photos.

I'm wondering if maybe the bulbs I got are slightly longer than yours and that is what is causing the glare. I see an adjustment screw for the bulb shield inside the housing, but the head of the screw is inside the housing. I would assume the housing is sealed in a similar fashion to the headlight housings. The bulbs are definitely seated fully. What a pain. I will look more into it tomorrow. Thanks for all the help so far Keithvibe.

I made some glare shields yesterday and they definitely help, but its still not as good as your pattern Keithvibe. The shields cover about half of the bulb. In the dark you can see a reduction in glare but I'm still not satisfied. My fogs appear to be aimed much lower than yours as well Keithvibe. I just can't figure out what the difference between our setups would be. You said you didn't modify the housings or the bulbs, correct? Just adjusted the aim? When I look at that thread about modding 9005 bulbs to work in the fogs there is obviously an increase in glare. Probably due to the fact that there is no coating on the end of the bulb. My next step will probably be coating the tip of the HID bulb with ceramic paint. I just don't want to significantly reduce the life of the bulb. But I'm not going to use them as is on public roads anyways so I guess there's nothing to lose. What kit are you currently using Keithvibe?

just be careful if you do coat the end of the bulb. It may cause a weak spot in the uv globe that surrounds the hid capsule and cause it to either explode or melt.IF you do decide to coat the end of the bulb make sure you get the highest temp paint you can. 1300degs or more.I didn't modify my headlamps.I don't recall what kits i got for my headlights and fogs, fact is the 3000k fog light bulbs didn't come with my kit, i use two different temps in my fogs. 6000k for the summer and 3000k for the winter. It could be I got lucky and got a mid week production car where they did their job right and got everything is perfect.i'll snap a few photos of my 3000k bulbs before i put them back in to day.
