About the '09 engine choices..

Post by Nightstandvibe »

1) Is the 2.4 the ecotec, i.e., not a 'yoda engine?2) Is the 1.8 the very same engine that worked so well in our '03? I never had a complaint about that engine....

The 1.8L is the same engine from the last generation. It has been given a tweak over to produce a little more power. The VVTL-i was dropped though so it is just a VVT-iThe 2.4L is a Toyota engine. It is used the Scion tc, Xb, Corolla S, and the base Rav 4. I believe a slightly larger version is used in the Camry 4cyl. too.The 2.4L gives you 164hp and noticeable torque benefits over the 1.8, although the 1.8 is a little stronger, the difference in 10hp from the old 130hp 1.8 is fairly negligible as the new generations have added a few pounds. If you have the option, get the 2.4L. The power will be beneficial and the difference in mpg's to me at least is not enough to warrant a smaller powerplant. Also the 2.4L has just as reliable a record as the 1.8L VVT-i engine so you are in safe hands.

The Camry also uses the 2.4 litre, which is standard on the base trim (LE). The 2.4 litre is rated for 158 hp @ 6000 RPM....

I stand slightly corrected, didn't know they kept the XRS moniker for the Corolla. Odd that they dropped it for the Matrix though, either way they should have done something for the XRS other thant he 2.4. Should have been 2.4 available as an option in the others, standard in the S, and the XRS should have a turbo or S/C package like the tc does.
