A little over a year ago my brakes started to whistle under braking. I took it to my Volvo dealer which I work in and they showed me the pads and I had about 80% of life still left. Now for the past 2 months its back to whistling again. What can that be? Is there a way to know when you need new pads? Is it dust, metal to metal?
they could be glazed over.. question would be why are you taking a vibe to a volvo dealer lol unless i missed the post were you got a vovo.. if so my bad..

First thing i would do is to check to make sure you don't need new brakes. The squeal could be coming from the low brake pad and your ridding on the low brake sensor i.e. a little piece of metal on the back of the brake pad the would ride up against the rotor warning you that you need new brakes. When they did the brake job the last time did they apply brake grease to the back of the pad and spacers? If not that could be causing your squeaks. If you used your brakes a lot. Ride them, do a lot of High speed braking your rotors and pads can become super heated and for a lack of a better word, hard shell, or glazed. Take out the pads and look at them do they look shinny in parts? If so then they are glazed. You can sand down the pads with a wetdry 300-400grit sandpaper till all the shinnyness goes away. clean and dry the pad and place it back in the caliper with a nice amount of break grease applied to the back of the pads. DO NOT GET THE GREASE ON THE FRONT OF THE PAD OR YOU WILL HAVE NO BRAKES AT ALL.Also check to make sure the pads are fully retracting.
