Check engine light?

Post by Celtic_Curse »

Anyone else have their check engine light on? I think it may be the CAI? Anyone else have one? It came on suddenly yesterday, wonering what might be the cause because I haven't noticed any difference in the performance? Thanks for the help.

There's over 2,000 causes for the CEL to illuminate. You'll have to get the code read in order to narrow it down.

I was just wondering if this is normal for S/C and CAI? Or am I unique therefore having to get the code read. Thanks for the help.

Unfortunately here in Canada most places charge even to read the code. I got a code reader several years ago on sale and it has paid for itself many times over.

is there someone on forums in your area with a scangauge? That'll read the codes.

If you have a Autozone near by they should do it for free. Most auto parts store's do now. They guess if they tell you what the prob is you will buy the part to fix it.

Do they have any Autozones in Canada? Thought that was a US chain. Partsource may do it, although I don't know what they charge.

If you dont run a ECM, you can throw a CEL with a SC/cai combo as it will lean/rich more so than the stock airbox. Reset the cel by turning off the car, take off the negative on the battery terminal for 5 min or so then put it back on and start the car. Let it idle for a couple min to see if the CEL comes back. You can also clean your MAF with some MAF cleaner, they get dirty real good with FI. Just did mine on my ms3 this weekend.

Its running richer than it used too, not really running any leaner than when it was just the CAI. Oh well I am taking it into the shop cause I need to swap the sparkplugs for a cooler set anyways, I'll get the code read and post the results. I was reading on MO and the combo can throw the CEL and cause the car to run leaner but I don't hear any pinging which is good. How do you tell if the engine is pinging?

Unfortunately your screwed if you got a po171.Some cars don't throw a lean code like mine,Lancer's or Damronjr. You may be able to get away with a short ram,but I know another s/c trix guy who has the same problem with the sr.You may have to look at an aftermarket piggy to run your cai.

Well the code is "Engine Running Lean". However the light went off over two weeks ago and has remained off...weird. Of course the dealership wanted to change my fuel filter for $250.00 but I declined. I did have the new plugs installed though today (NGK) I'll see what happens next in my S/C adventure.

Well thought I would post an update. First the car got rear ended so its going into the shop, hatch is toast. Secondly before I did that I have been taking it on the highway and doing some WOT tests to see if I can trip the CEL. Well nothing, it was even hot out and still nothing, She is running fine and no ssues so far. So do you think I am safe or should I buy Wave Actions Airbox? Also is there any differences between an 03 airbox and the O4 etc.Thanks.PS Didn't know the VW VR6 and BORA is that slow.

Yep I yielded to oncomming traffic so did the guy behind me and then next thing you know WHAM. I get out ask the guy (removed) and he goes "sorry thought you were going to go". It was a 91 Jimmy and the hatch got punched good and bumper is cracked. Totally wrecked my day. You must be going through the same trying to get yours fixed in this city it takes forever.

But wouldn't you know it, a cement truck was shedding chunks of cement as we were going northbound on Deerfoot just past the Calf Robe bridge and nailed the front bumper cover by the passenger headlamp. If I didn't have bad luck, I wouldn't have any luck at all
