HU with usb port

Post by vibrtor »

I've been researching aftermarket HU's with front usb port and am finding that the manufacturer states that you should not start the vehicle with the flash drive installed. This means you have to take it out and reinsert it each time you start the car. This seems totally illogical to me. It's like having to remove a cd every time you want to start the car. It follows that it's then going to start at the beginning of the cd/flash drive every time you reinsert it. I'd appreciate feedback on this. Does this concept seem as ridiculous to you as it does to me?

i can see this if the HU can use the usb for updating firmware, so if something is plugged in it may search that device to boot from it to update. If something stays plugged in on boot aka car starting and there is no "firmware" update, it could just take a while longer to load the HU OS because its caught searching the usb drive.

usb port must be different the sd slot. my wifes van always has a sd card in it and never had any problems.

JVC customer support said starting the car with the flash drive installed may destroy the data (via a voltage spike(?)). I would think, as long as the HU source is not set on USB, there wouldn't be a problem. I never had a problem with my desktop or laptop when the usb port was turned off via "disable removable hardware". The owners manual for Clarion and Panasonic say the same as JVC. So, I suspect it must be a universal requirement for any HU with a usb port.Does anyone out there have one with a usb port? Do you remove the flash drive each time you start your vehicle?

That's what I was hoping to hear. I figured, as long as the radio isn't set to USB when it's started, there's no problem.
