how to change a thermostat on a Jetta?

Post by 808 Vibes »

I've done maintenance on cars over the years, but a thermostat is not one of them. I would like to try, just not sure what's involved as hon got it used and we don't have a manual for it. It's been running hot and everything (cooling system related) except the thermostat and radiator have already been changed. We figure the next thing to try is the cheap part. We'd prefer not to buy a manual, as this car also has *transmission* issues. (hint, hint!) I believe it is a production year '99 jetta. Any ideas? Thanks!

Well, it can't be that difficult, it's most likely at the end of one of the hoses, which makes life easy... prolly 2-3 bolts and you are in...

Thanks, everybody...but he did not wait for me. While I was at work, he had the lead singer in one of his bands change it. So far so good..

yeah i've replaced a couple thermostats on previous vehicles, and they're very easy. the best part is that it's REALLY cheap when compared with the other parts of the cooling system glad everything is going ok

Step 1) Drive to your VW dealerStep 2) Have them replace the thermostatVW's are like Saabs, they are absolutely pointless with their setup under the hood, and really hard to work on. My fiance had an 00 Cabrio GLX that needed spark plugs replaced on the 2 point slow. In order to change the plugs you have to remove the intake manifold as it went over the top of the engine, then replace the plugs. What a joke.Nissan's don't make much more sense. I changed the oil on my friends 05 Altima, in order to get to the filter you have to reach up inside the passenger side wheel splash shield, the filter is mounted 90 degrees so the second you unscrew it, oil comes pouring down the sides of the engine and shield. Biggest joke I've ever seen for an oil filter.

Make sure all the air is out of the system or you will have issues!
