Day 2 of this ridiculous journey to get myself off the cig. My fiance has cut back and is going to stop next week. Hopefully me being on week two I will be a bit stronger to help her out.
The first month is hard... and you just need to get into a new routine...I smoked for 9 years, and finally called it quits about 1 1/2 years ago... quit cold turkey... My biggest problem was wanting to take just one drag here or there... as long as you can resist that and get yourself into a new routine... you'll forget you ever smoked....I almost never think about it anymore...even when I'm drinking... it's truley psychological... I even have to put the cigarette's away at night and I don't think about it like... oh yeah one of those looks good... I don't even think about them.
Thanks people! One of the good things is I quit smoking in cars awhile back before I sold my Civic. So neither me or the lady smoke in our cars, nor have we ever since we got them. So that helps.
good luck with it, a few guys at work has said they wanted to quit smoking..but a few days later they just end up smoking again..hopefully you fight it all off and go all the way
Congratulations! You can do it! By the way, when I was shopping for my Vibe last December, I quickly chose the one I have over the other one at the dealership, because the other one clearly belonged to a smoker. (I smoked a long time ago, but it has been 40 years.)
One day at a time will turn into months into years. Your clothes will smell better and you may get head rushes from too much oxygen. The key is to break habits and you will soon won't have the urges.Be strong and you can do it.Andrew
My last (removed)..........1977. Try to top that! For a year I slobbered like Pavlov's dog every time I smelled cigarette smoke, which in those days was everywhere, work, restaurants, bars. Over time I developed an extreme aversion to cigarette smoke and now I am one of those PITAs that won't put up with cigarette smoke ever, it makes me want to barf.
Hopefully these days get easier. Day 3 today, seems like it's been a month already but I found some interesting info. What Happens if You Stop Smoking Right Now* In 20 minutes your blood pressure will drop back down to normal.* In 8 hours the carbon monoxide (a toxic gas) levels in your blood stream will drop by half, and oxygen levels will return to normal.* In 48 hours your chance of having a heart attack will have decreased. All nicotine will have left your body. Your sense of taste and smell will return to a normal level.* In 72 hours your bronchial tubes will relax, and your energy levels will increase.* In 2 weeks your circulation will increase, and it will continue to improve for the next 10 weeks.* In three to nine months coughs, wheezing and breathing problems will dissipate as your lung capacity improves by 10%.* In 1 year your risk of having a heart attack will have dropped by half.* In 5 years your risk of having a stroke returns to that of a non-smoker.* In 10 years your risk of lung cancer will have returned to that of a non-smoker.* In 15 years your risk of heart attack will have returned to that of a non-smoker.
It's absoulty amazing to me, being a non-smoker all my life (cigs that is) That we, as a people, know full well these days the helth problems smoking causes and yet new smokers pop up every day and old smokers continue to die.. it's sad... But, I'm HAPPY for you.. keep it up man...

I started smoking in 1974 i was smoking 2 packs a day in 2002. I had acupuncture 5/12/02 and haven't had a smoke since. I never even had a craving afterwards. you can do it.
day 3 is draggin along, since last night my throat has been a little bit scratched. Nothing really noticeable but you feel like you may cough and nothing is there. I've been gnawin on toothpicks like crazy but it helps.
Good luck, hang in there. My mother smoked for nearly 55 years and didn't quit til she had an emergency quadruple bypass - you don't want that, trust me.

My fiance is not doin so hot, but hopefully I can help to give her a little nudge. As for me, day 5. Depsite getting a little tossed last night I did not have one.
You can do it! I quit cold turkey a little over three years ago,and now I wonder how I could ever have been a smoker.Plus the money I save of a pack a day and acouple of 12 packs a month makes my Vibe payment.

good job whelan, i'm proud of you man . i'm trying to quit too. i smoke black and milds, about a pack a day, and i'm starting to lose my taste for em, so instead of something else, i figure it's time to quit. i've already cut back to less than a pack a day, and as i bought my last pack just a lil bit ago, i told myself that it would be the last one. i spend about $$1,200 a year on those, and i need to find something else i can do with that money, most likely like catch up on them damn bills that just won't leave me alonemy girlfriend also doesn't care for my smoking, and since i care about her opinion, i think it'll be a good birthday present for her, too (she doesn't know i want to quit) to replace my cravings, i plan on using toothpics and gum. if i'm just at the house doing a bunch of nothing, i'm gonna go for a run or walk around the block. i wanna get back in shape anyway, so i figure doing this will help. i just bought some air max 180's for ten bucks the other day, so it's time to break em in EDIT @ 1:54am: just came back from my first trip around the block
