GPS Location

Post by 09Red_Se »

Haven't seen any reference to GPS in the search option so - Adding a TomTom 720 mainly as an integration hub for my iPod and hands free for my cell phone and the factory head unit.Tried driving with a couple locations I thought would be OK on the windshield - but in practice this isn't viable in any location I can reach the touch screen.Anyone have a successful location, and suggested mounting accessories? - and still get signal?- Thanks,

Thanks !! Mountguys is where I ordered.Got the 720 cradle and the ram-rap-178U base ordered.Decided on the 2009 dash to use the air vent to the right of the cluster.Experimented with the stock mount, but couldn't get enough travel on the adjustment due to the bend in the neck.Easy reach, good signal reception, not blocking view through windshield. Thanks for the suggestions - just had to get out of the mode of finding a good window location.Tried heating and bending the neck on the stock base. It's some kind of cast resin material - not a plastic that softens with heat. Broke it trying - but not too upset since it wasn't working out anyway.

I checked out that proclip site Kev. I liked the ease of operation and install but didn't like the way it covered the vent and hazzard button. I have laid out a similar, but different design on my autocad program and have found a way to install the bracket to the right of the hazzard and rear defrost switches. It is also out of the way of the airbag if deployed. As with most things, designing is easy, fabricating takes some time. I am going for a universal approach as well. I'll get some pictures posted of the progress.

2 of 2Drilled a hole in the dash under the top (visor?) of the guages.When/if I remove the GPS, the hole is unseen. Only seen here due to camera angle. Had to pull out bezel and drilled from behind to get a clean hole.

Forgot to show the 'other' end.Drilled ahole in the console on the underside of the 'lip' - again, to hide the hole should I chose to remove it all.Cig lighter and ipod cables routed to here. Also tried a vent mount before . Found it to be shaky and insecure.Maybe the RAM one is better - but wanted something a bit more secure than my past experience.

The only mod I may regret .. then again if I remove the GPS, I'll; still want an aux input cable for the ipod.

The drivers side center vent would be a good place for the GPS, but I don't want to give up the functionality of the vent. I've tried various places with the suction cup mount, I like over by the light sensor in the bottom left corner, but I don't like running the wire there. The center of the windshield is ok Even the moon roof glass is a viable option. However, I'd like to come up with a more regular mount, and one that is not so obvious. Around here, the rate of GPS thefts from cars is so high, the cops are recommending to even make sure your suction cup mount doesn't leave a ring on the glass, so I certainly don't want to leave the mount there as well. So what other GPS mounts do people use in Vibes?

I switched from XM to Siruis, got a smaller radio, and moved it all the way down. Added a mount for the TT720 right about, works great there. I'll get a new pic later today, but here's the mount.

I have a TT 730 and the window mount it comes with is such a pain ie doesnt stick to the windshield reliably and the unit is hard to read with the sun. I want to mount it lower..somewhere on the console but am not sure where is best. I'd rather not use a vent mount but there isnt alot of useable space on the 05 Vibe. Any suggestions re a mount designed for the Vibe and TT730?

I recently found an old floppy disk case, that when I take the lid off it fits between the shifter and the cup holder, gives a nice smooth flat surface for the suction cup mount. It also is easy to move out of the way, so I can hide the fact from smash and grabbers that the car might have at some point had a GPS in in it.edit - I'll post a pic after I clean my nasty car
