Hi. I just purchased an XM Inno radio. It is a Pink Inno which is a 1st generation one. I did not buy the car kit, but I do want to use it in my car. I already have a hardwired FM Modulator that I use for my Ipod so I know I can plug it in there. I was trying to save money and not buy the car kit because I already have an XM car antenna from a different XM receiver - and thought I could just use my home kit in the car and plug it into the Car's outlet.Does anyone know if the car uses more power when running something from the regular outlet than the cigarette lighter? If so, this is the only benefit I can see to getting the car kit, other than having the ability to dock it both at home and work - if that was true. Would it save me money in the long run to get the car kit so I can run it in the cigarette lighter? The car kit is from $60 - $70.Meg
The unit is still going to take the same amount of power. The only benefit is that it won't convert to ac first. It's certainly not going to save you any money to get the car kit. The biggest difference will be a) the sat. receiver is smaller so it can be mounted to the outside of the car for best reception, b) the car adapter can be hardwired through a 12v source, eliminating the need for the lighter adapter.
Thanks - well since I already have the xm car antenna from my other old XM radio - I'll get good reception and I think I'll try and do without it. I know the car antenna works plugged into the home kit, because I tried it in the house tonight. Also it turns out my xm nexus (which is not activated) had the exact same power adapter as this new one, so I'll have an extra power adapter I can leave in the house if I need to charge it in the house. I checked and it will play in the house with my stereo plugged into the headphone jack and using it's own antenna, where I am located, so I don't think I really need the home kit in the house that much.Thanks.Meg
