So over the past few days I have been doing a LOT of maintenance to the car. Two big things I did were getting the tranny fluid drained and filled, and switching over to Mobile 1 high mileage. I can not express how much better the car drives and shifts. It is pretty amazing. I was already impressed with the car, and now even more so.Question, what percentage does a trans drain actually get? Would it make sense to do it again with my next oil change, or is the amount it gets really enough? Was not a flush, just drain and fill.As I stated I used Mobile 1 high mileage (94,000 miles), and I had the tranny done at the local Toyota dealership. They were awesome, I am so glad this thing is a Toyota under it. I also had my break pads replaced, and rears adjusted. they gave me a free rental car (Camry) for the day to do the work. The thing runs like a dream now though. I am going to replace my plugs this week, and already replaced the air filter. I am very happy.
For the trans if you just drained the fluid form the pan you only got 4 quarts out. A full flush would have gotten the torque converter and trans cooler. What you did is fine and better than nothing but you could do it again after the new fluid mixed with the older and get even more fluid that was mixed with the older out next time. Technically the trans pan should have been dropped and the filter and magnet cleaned, this should be done at least once in its life...If this was your first trans drain and re-fill at 94,000, personally I would do it again but that is just the way I maintain my vehicles.
Honestly it is new to me, and I don't know what is done. That is why I am debating doing it again. I am steering away from flush, because I do not know how often this was done, and how much build up may get knocked around.I was figuring I may do it with my next oil change again.
If you do another drain and re-fill that is still good. Like I said you will be then extracting some of the new oil and then some of the old that was never gotten from the first drain and re-fill. Either way you are good and doing good things for the trans! There has always been that old wives tail of if a car has never had a trans fluid change to not do one ever then for fear of dislodging particles in the trans. I have never believed this and if the trans is in good working condition at the time of the drain and re-fill, it will be fine after if a D&R is done before. That is why removing the trans pan is best to inspect the magnet and clean or replace the filter as well. Debris sticks to the magnet and the cooler as the cooler heats and cools down. The best flush is one the heats the cooler to dislodge the debris and collect it.
Here I did that a while ago with a big thread.http://forums.genvibe.com/zerothread?id=28967Ive done 3 in a row at each oil change to try to get most of the old stuff out. It helps a TON each time its done.
In the reef keeping hobby we have a saying "dilution is the solution to pollution."I have no problem with doing drain and fills, and actual aggressive flush would frighten me.

I used brake cleaner to clean the pan, magnet and filter screen. The pan was pretty clean actually and I do not remember how much the gasket was but have the receipt at home.
I had my tranny apart last weekend.Replaced the VB and the torque converter. My pan was fairly clean, but I used varsol to clean it up and the gasket cost me $22.50 canadian.

wow. my tranny gets flushed every 18K miles... full synthetic. already replaced the VB with an upgraded modded one last Jan (since it was slipping from the added power). car still runs great. i can only imagine what the fluids would look like if i changed it at that many miles. LOL. i don't know if the car would even be running!

LOL. i don't know if the car would even be running!i'm at 37k, and never had the "15k or 30k major service" done on my vibe, and i don't remember if a D&F is included in the service. for $500, i'd rather get the stuff done somewhere else, but most of the stuff i can do on my own or with little help from a friend. about how much does it cost to get a D&F on my tranny??btw, i love when mrcn rce hits lift (and i take my revs up there a lot), so now that i think of it, i'm sure it needs to be done. about how much do you think it'll cost me??
