Yep, today Paul (Merzbow) got his driving ability back, so we went to take pictures somewhere. Well, we never made it. Paul was following me through a roundabout, when both he and I hit a patch of black ice and we both flew over the curb. Paul just needed to replace his tire, as it was bubbled on the side. My tire is fine. What is not fine, however, are my wheel, lower a-arm, and k-member. Yippie. Probably going to be around $300+ to fix it. Meanwhile, it drives like crap. And before anyone says anything, YES I was driving WAY too fast. Here are our tracks after we dropped my car off at Belle Tire.
Oh I do deserve it. But let me say this. I do not want anybody scolding me or telling me how irresponsibe of me it is to drive the way I do. Please feel free to laugh at my expense, but limit it to that. Thank you.
Yeah, luckily you did it on the winters. What an f-in PITA.Don't worry,I did the same thing a few years ago,not in the Vibe, but in my Z24 and I screwed up my rack.I won't laugh,I'll save it for next time.

i've lost control of my sunfire on this twisty road, slid into the ditch, but no damage, also in the winter of 03 when i first had the car, slid into a ditch and still no damage, but the tire popped off for a split second and i lost 1/2 the air in the tire, so i got lucky both times, it aint a fun thing to do, and obviously can be pricey..atleast you have it easy compared to ppl on the 400 here in ontario over the weekend http://www.torontosun.com/News....html

I did that maybe 35-30 years ago in the Painted Desert in AZ, yes it can get really cold there and it had been snowing.Fortunately there were no curbs, my Fiat 128 3p ended up going backwards into the gravel on the side of the road, no damage. But I have an excuse, I'm from California, what do I know about driving in ice and snow?Glad you're OK and damage is relatively minor.

wow that sucks...all i can say is it could have been much worse, flipping can happen when curbs and speed are involved...glad you didnt mangle the nice wheels as the others said

HAHAHA, what a day. It wasn't funny at the time but it sure as hell is now.It could have been WAAAAY worse. I watched AJ go around in front of me and wondered "where the heck is he going?", then saw his car rocketing over the curb and thought "(removed)?" then noticed my wheels locked on the black ice as well...so I straightened out my wheel and took the curb head on so not to damage my steering and suspension assembly and I blasted through the curb as well and pulled up next to AJ on the side lol....it was pretty crazy.Joatman my friend he asked to leave the troubles at the door. I think everyone here knows it was irresponsible. I don't know where you live but I'm sure you know what black ice is? We weren't, well I wasn't going any faster than the speed limit around the round-a-bout. Crap happens, we live and we learn. You can't part the Red Sea...BTW it's cool to live a little and not hide in a concrete cellar burried in Styrofoam worms Here are more pics:
oh MAN!!!!!!first of all, merz, glad you're back!!!! i bet you missed the vibe something crazy!!!!!glad that stuff all happened on both your winters.second of all, Andrew! you must slow down! how irresponsible of you!!!! J/K!!!just kidding. that was cool of you to take merz out for a fun drive on his first day.

I'm sure that you never had any traffic incidents or tickets of any sort in your entire life. I said no lectures because I know that certain members here love to tell people how flawed they are are in the art of driving. I know what I did, and I know it was irresponsible. But still, you find it necessary to point it out. Next time, please keep it to yourself. Thank you.
As the saying goes: "Good judgment comes from experience, and experience comes from - bad judgment." Despite the material cost, it looks like this was a relatively painless way to pick up some experience and good judgment. And yes, black ice can be really hard to spot sometimes until it's too late to avoid.Good to see that you're back on the road in your Vibe.

(removed)...I just got my driving rights back I'm not drifting anything for a bit (removed)...8 points on my record, I don't need my insurance company sniffing around.
those pictures are funny though the skid marks are right next to each other haha......as much as it sucks...... i laughed...... ..........i cant really talk irresponsible because ive been pulled over more then a dozen times***ok ill add this too this summer.....with my chrome rims.....i woked form 3am- noon and my gf wanted me to take her shopping so i hit up dunkin donuts......i hit the curb around the drivethrue......ran over the curb leaving the drive-thru.......then i thought it was over but i started driving on the main road and took a sip of my coolata and ran against the curb in the right lane :/.......it just sucks those are my good rims....now laugh at me dont worry i broke up with her like a month later
If it makes you feel any better, awhile ago I (in my Vibe) misjudged a parking spot in a...wait for it...dry, flat parking lot. I rammed the curb at good speed, destroying the tire and bending the rim. I bought a new rim and set of tires. Even though the dealer couldn't find anything wrong, there is still a slight vibration, but nothing bad.Feel better?

(removed), skater that's a good one...at that point I would probably just start running into things purposely for fun It wasn't too bad. It was pretty exciting I think lol. We all have experienced it. Last winter I was on ice and driving 15mph BELOW the speed limit because i knew it was ice. I started braking for a light probably 20 car lengths back but the wheels wouldn't gain any traction and slid towards anyways so I was forced to curb it in order to prevnt getting t-boned in the busy intersection (I was getting new rims anyways) lol.
Post stupidity on the net, got to expect to catch some grief over it. I don't expect to change anyone. If you do something stupid and don't want anyone to tell you it was stupid, then don't post about it. People hit ice and skid in the winter, no biggie, I wouldn't have even thought it was stupid if ajflan hadn't said he knows he drives irresponsibly but doesn't care and doesn't want anyone to tell him so. at least he admits going "way too fast"Mezbrow, seeing how you reacted to my last post, it would be completely out of line for me to say that since you had an accident on your first day allowed to drive again, maybe you ought to practice some more before going back out on the real roads with the real drivers.styrofoam worms are terrible. If you are buried in a cellar, you can live off worms, but styrofoam has no nutritional value, There are packing materials that are made from an aerated starch product, much more environmentally friendly, and they have some nominal nutritional value, but hopefully you have a good water supply in that cellar.
Seriously joat, enough. You are the only one posting in this thread that feels it necessary to act as though you are above everyone else. I will ask you again to refrain.
yeah black ice sucks. i bent a wheel on the curb about 8 years ago because of that crap Quote, originally posted by Merzbow »I watched AJ go around in front of me and wondered "where the heck is he going?", then saw his car rocketing over the curb and thought "(removed)?" then noticed my wheels locked on the black ice as well...i just got a visual of that. i lol'ed cuz i'd be thinkin the same things as you this is when you need some batmobile/kitt/gadgetmobile features woulda come in handy. why don't the manufacturers offer these kinda extras?? glad you guys are ok. merz, glad you got your license back. i know you've been countin the seconds til you could get behind that steering wheel again

LOL, yeah it was a good experience though. I'm glad I straightened out my wheels though so minimal damage occured. BTW, i now have THREE different style, and model tires on my winter rims (removed)...Goodyear performance tread on front drivers side, Kelly all season on front passenger side and some other random all seasons on the rear.Joat I think it was more of how you said it that fueled the fire here. Everyone else mentioned how stupid it was but they were laughing and joking about it instead of being stern. BTW, lol @ the worms Joat. I dunno about you but I am a big fan of carbohydrates like breads and pastas so I don't even know if REGULAR worms would even keep me alive
I feel for ya man! Did the same thing here but unfortunately got caught in my summer tires and damaged the same componenets. $1500 later she got fixed and honestly I didn't hit the curb that hard but lots of damamge to rim, tire and suspension components.

One piece of advice taht my dad gave me a long time ago before anything happened was to always straighten the wheels before hitting something and I'm glad I remembered lol. Poor AJ.
it was nice of u to pass that information on to your friend haha your right i should have just pretended like i was doing it on purpose to ruin these rims cause i have that much money to buy a new set haha......i wish........better then my cuz though she got her civic stolen an they took her system an rims an left it sitting in an alley on a donut tire and a pallet
Thank god for winter rims. You silly people, unless your car has this on the back, you should not attempt fun stunts in the cold!J/K, black ice is impossible to see or handle once it'(removed), your kinda at the mercy of the road and where ever it takes you. Glad you are ok though!
Wow guys, i'm glad your both OK... cars and parts are replacable, you guys aren't, WWGVD if we lost ya's... lol.... I gotta say, i've done the VERY same thing way back in my VW... I didn't have snow tires then and the LAME A/S tires people hold onto for dear life ended me up on a curb, with a broken wheel, bent A-arm, bent Half shaft and a bent strut...!!! Basically the right front corner took the whole hit (it wasn't a semi-curved curb like that one, but a nice 90* side street curb) It wasn't a month and I had snow tires... Not that they would have helped in the event of Black Ice... BI has a way of making you nothing more than a passenger... Ish happens, just LAST WEEK, my GF, backed into her brother 04' Hundi Tiburon, now she's gotta come up with 500$ for his deductible.... and NOT 2 DAYS later, i backed the Vibe into her friends Grand Am... I didn't do anything but leave some frosty paint on he door cladding, but imagine how dumb I felt, knowing that the same thing happened 2 days earlier... Ish happens, if you learn from it, good, if not, stop driving now... lol and I think you guys learned... obla de obla da, life goes on... Oh Paul, congratz on getting you lisense back...!!
Here is the prequel to the other vid:http://youtube.com/watch?v=gxY5FsUNIGwPretty powerful video, however there are people in this world that DO know how to drive and can control their cars, as hard as it may be for some people to believe...they are rare but they exist.
Yeah thanks for telling me to straighten my wheels Paul!! Haha j/k. I have always know its best to go over curbs with the wheels straight, but it just happened so fast that I didn't really have time to think it out. Oh, well, live and learn. The new wheel cost me $80 installed, the lower a-arm is $90, and installation and alignment will be $144. For a grand total of only $314. Not too bad, maybe I'll do this again some time!

haha you two think thats bad how bout hitting a curb twice and damaging both rims and the rear crossmember ( at different times). ill have to post some pics of mine later.also you can see where you hit the curb with your rim ajfaln.
Sad to hear dat.. such things wouldnt have happen if u have the coilovers and big brakes! Jokes aside.. Pls remeber to go for a good computerised 4 wheel Alignment after the repairs.. 100% sure dat your camber and toe angles are out the moment yr wheels hit the curb.. maybe u should install a set camber bolts and adjust the front camber to -1.5 to-2 before u try the stunt again.. take care bro

Also, just a quick note on the camber bolts, I had a set in my Subaru, one night decided to "play" just a little in a parking lot(and with ONE hard turn) well, one slipped and I had to limp the car home 20mi with a tire rubbing the wheel well over most every bump...
ha! voltz! welcome to cold weather driving! all the camber adjustments in the world won't help a car sliding along on ice! although i do still love those coilovers!
